I suppose you have to be just wary of your suppliers. I happent to eat mostly halal due to my fiance being Muslim. Being in Australia, animals must be stunned (effectively braindead) before slaughter so they're quickly and painlessly bled not disimilar to kosher slaughter. We tend to look for free frange and cage free stock when we do eat meat - which is rare out of pure laziness, maybe twice or thrice a week and even then, usually seafood or poultry.
