i wont name names but theres a few rap artists i have enjoyed.especially one with a bad rep but the thing is,he is an artist and this is his way of expressing himself however.....many critique rap because of its gang beginning. i happen to think marshall ;) has a gift for writing.the swearing ...:sigh: its the drawback to rap. there are christian rappers but i've yet to listen to it.im not a rap lover, just happen to see the talent in one particular one.

It's arrogant, obnoxious, talentless, musical retarded, womanizing dribble! The slang is moronic. How anyone can be so lazy as they can't say a whole world and must drop a few letters for no reason is beyond me.

I know about rap. Rap is ment to express suffering. To express the hardships of the rapper. But most of it is all cursing and talking about their...ahem...women, to put it nicely and G rated.

Rap is simply, when broken down "Retards attempting poetry". They claim you need talent to make a good rap with good lyrics and rhyme, but when you make up words like "shizzle" and "skeet" and stuff like that to rhyme, you have no talent. Making up words so you can rhyme is idiotic and sad.

My problem with rap music is the message (or lack thereof). I personally have no interest in listening to someone talk about their materialistic possesions, to a computer generated / recycled beat. Listen to: "The Doors - The End" and then perhaps you will understand what true musical talent is.

like i said, only ignorant ppl would make this kind of statement.

you obviously dont know much about hip hop. do you even know the difference between hip hop and rap? do you even know how hip hop started??? you do know 2pac's message and poetry are used at many many colleges for its political, sociological, literature stuff(harvard, yale, ucla, cal, princeton, cornell,uc san diego, nyu, etc) i was the hip hop club president at columbia university(ivy league), so you dont want to go there!

In the Poetry for the People program I direct at Berkeley, I include hip hop lyrics in our study of poetry.

While there are a few individual songs that I've isolated (Aceyalone's "The Balance," Talib Kweli's "The Proud," and 2Pac's "Dear Mama" in this year's reader), I've yet to figure out which artists' entire lyrical oeuvre, on paper, stand out as a collection of "poems."

In your opinion, which MCs' writing consistently distinguishes them as "poets"? Indeed, is there any rapper worth putting along side the Nikki Giovannis, Martin Espadas, and Naomi Shihab Nyes of the world?

Keep in mind that in asking this question, I'm asking you to ignore any artist's (a) voice, (b) flow, (c) beats, (d) production, (e) dance moves, (f) videos, (g) style, (h) attitude, (i) street credibility, (j) wheels, etc.

For example, consider Notorious B.I.G. I love Biggie. I appreciate his baritone voice, his flow and command of breath, his stage presence, and his personality contrasted with Puffy's radio-friendly production. But in my opinion, rarely has Big Poppa ever written lyrics that stand out on their own as poetry.

I probably wouldn't put this in my course reader:
When the la-la hits ya
Lyrics just split ya head so hard
That ya hat can't fit ya
Either I'm witcha or against ya
Format venture
Back through that maze I sent ya
Talkin to the rap inventor

Langston Hughes, he ain't.

Now, don't get me wrong: there's a grip of reasons to study and pay homage to what Biggie does. But I'm not sure that his words work as well on paper as do others' lyrics.

Ultimately, I would defend all MCs as poets.

Ahh...but why exactly are Pac's rhymes studied? I believe that it has much more to do with his death and the culture at the time than it does with the art of lyricism.

Why is it that so many people hate rap. Whenever I talk about rap someone always says something stupid like, "rap only objectifies women!" or something like that. How many people on this website here dont like rap. Also out of all of you that dont like rap how much do you listen or know about rap.

Why do you care either way if some people hate rap? Do you need their approval before you can listen to it? Is anybody stopping you from listening to or liking rap music?

Why is it that so many people hate rap.

Because it's misogyny masquerading as poetery, and besides, it all sucks.

Whenever I talk about rap someone always says something stupid like, "rap only objectifies women!" or something like that.

How is being offended by this stupid?? I guarantee that if you print any of the lyrics of lil' jon's latest sterling release, you'd be banned. How does listening to it help you grow as a Christian?

How many people on this website here dont like rap.

I hate it, it should be exterminated as a vermin so it never comes back. How to do that? I dunno, what do you suggest?

Also out of all of you that dont like rap how much do you listen or know about rap.
Enough to review it for a website, enough to know to keep it away from my kids, enough to hate it.

Now thrash metal, there's a genre! Why do you hate it? How much do you listen to or know about it? Taste is subjective, but rap stuill sucks. :amen:

Rap as a whole doesn't suck. Most of the rap that's on TV and radio does suck; the majority of it is materialistic and sinful. Just like any other style of music, there are good and bad artists; lyrically awesome and lyrically stupid songs.

Forgive me if I blow your mind with this statement, but claiming all others (mostly in this case) are ignorant because they don't like your music is ignorant in itself. It's putting your fingers in your ears, closing your eyes tight, and screaming really loud so you can't see or hear the truth; at the very least, hear a decent opinon of the other side.

To those who hate hip-hop: So you hate the genre, regardless of the content? Even if it's positive you'd hate it?

I'm not all about messages, that's a side note in my musical flavor. It's more about the sound. I hate the droll sound of hip hop and of rap. I perfer the heavyness and sharpness of rock and opera.

But lyrically, I have nothing against hip hop. Hip hop is rap's goody goody brother. Rap is the one I hate lyrically and rhymically and just musically all around.
