Why do we need stored memories in the brain?

From a Christian perspective, one could turn the question around and ask, "Why is there need for the resurrection if the spirit/soul survives death?"

The idea of a disembodied spirit is more Greek (Plato) than Christian. Once we approach the OP question from a specifically Christian perspective, we can say that the divine intention is that the whole person, i.e. body & spirit, are to always be united. Does the resurrected body have a brain? I don't know, but my intuition is that the resurrected person is what endures in the afterlife and not just the spirit.

To think in more Platonic terms of a disembodied spirit lends itself to a denigration of the body. But, of course, the Incarnation gives dignity to the whole person, body & spirit. Since the whole person was assumed by the Incarnation, the faith is that the whole person is redeemed and endures post-resurrection.

They will still be themselves. Their brain will reprogram their new heart.

You're just making things up.

If you put a new hard drive into a computer, and reload your software onto it, voila ... there you go.

I have a degree in computer science and worked in IT for 25 years. Your analogy is nonsensical.
There are countless functional differences between two instances of the same OS.

And what of that interim period between death and resurrection? No earthly memory?

It's a huge misconception to associate "the heart" when the bible talks about it to mean the blood pumping organ. You do not think or feel with your physical heart. The fact that it can be replaced by a machine, or transplanted, and you wake up with your identity intact, should clearly indicate this.
Opening another door:
Research into the idea of heart intelligence began accelerating in the second half of the 20th century. During the 1960s and ’70s pioneer physiologists John and Beatrice Lacey conducted research that showed the heart actually communicates with the brain in ways that greatly affect how we perceive and react to the world around us. In 1991, the year the HeartMath Institute was established, pioneer neurocardiologist Dr. J. Andrew Armour introduced the term “heart brain.” He said the heart possessed a complex and intrinsic nervous system that is a brain.

Today, more than a half century after the Laceys began their research, we know a great deal more about the heart:

  • The heart sends us emotional and intuitive signals to help govern our lives.
  • The heart directs and aligns many systems in the body so that they can function in harmony with one another.
  • The heart is in constant communication with the brain. The heart’s intrinsic brain and nervous system relay information back to the brain in the cranium, creating a two-way communication system between heart and brain.
  • The heart makes many of its own decisions.
  • The heart starts beating in the unborn fetus before the brain has been formed, a process scientists call autorhythmic.
  • Humans form an emotional brain long before a rational one, and a beating heart before either.
  • The heart has its own independent complex nervous system known as “the brain in the heart.”

And wat of that interim period between death and resurrection? No earthly memory?

That's one of those mysteries that I don't think the scriptures address. Could that be why Jesus says the dead are sleeping?

My personal opinion is the interim period is not experienced by the dead. I have always thought, rightly or wrongly, that when we die our next experienced moment is at the resurrection with everyone else, at the judgment. In other words, we go from kronos time to kairos (appointed) time. But that is just me and I wouldn't lay down any bets on it. ;)

Jesus pwned soul sleep by purposely waiting a couple of days after receiving news that Lazarus was dead.

Look, it was just a thought.
No, it's doctrine.

Could the parts of the brain that we think store memory actually be channels to deeper soul memory.

Just a thought. No doctrine. I think Ralph Kramden told me about it.

and it can be replaced by a machine and be transplanted into other bodies while the identity of the person remains intact. But brain damage can dramatically change a person's personality and ability to function. Some people go literally psychotic like the austin texas shooter from the 60's had a brain tumor and then went on a murderous rampage. Lobotomies basically strip a person's personality away.

This is all pseudoscience gibberish. The heart pumps blood. The brain controls the heart.

A fetus' heart does develop about a week before the brain, though. The blood needs a way to circulate to the organs.

Alright, so what of those who are dead, not in Christ, but will be resurrected for the judgement? Are they asleep too?
They are in Hell as we speak.

That means they are dead, not asleep.

So they will be resurrected out of hell for the judgement? Are you making this up as you go?
