Many people say the earth is billions of years old. And in a way they are right. You will always believe what God sends you, even if it isn't so.

Non-YEC Christians have nothing really to lose in this game. Our salvation in Chist is secure either way. If the ToE is true, we were never committed to a literal Genesis anyway. If the ToE is overturned, and that happens to a lot of scientific theories, Ho hum. And the ToE being overturned, then Genesis could be literal as well as true but maybe not, Ho hum again. The only thing is, it would be a nuisance for the YECs to win because of the boost it would give their egregious right-wing political agenda but even so, the are a political as well as a religious minority and are not a serious threat.

YECs, on the other hand, have bet the ranch. No wonder they're nervous.

The book of the bible is not the problem, it's the disbelief, and even that's up to the individual, but when one pushes that Genesis/any book is not accurate, it can get messy because there are firm bible believers here.

Where does the Bible say specifically that the earth is 6,000 years old?

It doesn't of course. But that's not really the point - I was speaking loosely. The relevant point is that quite a few Christians believe things about the earth's history that are demonstrably incorrect. And the problem is that the way of thinking that underlies such believes - the distrust of science - has dangerous consequences.

Well, why not? The scriptures teach that Jesus took on human form. Why would you expect that He would not also share in human weakness. In this respect, I think the overall picture we get from Paul and the gospels is that Jesus indeed "shared" in our humanity and, by implication, our weaknesses.

Do you believe Jesus knew about general relativity?
Do you believe Jesus knew that the sun is 93 million miles from the Earth?
Do you believe Jesus knew everything about the human genome?

Word it how you will, there are those that believe that teaching, even suggesting anything other than what the bible is clear about, is disbelief in the truth/God's word.

People use the bible genealogies to infer 6000 years. It doesn't give an actual date and I don't think genealogies were intended to give a timeframe. I won't hold onto 6000 years but I believe it's much younger than billions.
