there are baisically 2 types of pigs, those bread for fat, and those bread for meat. The type bread for meat is extremely lean. I dont care for pork, one of the reasons being that it is so dry. I make homemade sausage sometimes, and even if I buy the fattiest cut of pork from the butcher, it still makes a sausage so dry that you choke on them. I actually have to grind extra fat in with the meat.

I dont think it's accurate to blame pork for obesity. Even though we eat pork, I dont think it has that prominent a role in our diets. The reason americans are fat is becuase of (a)sedintary lifestyles (b)portion controll (c)proccessed foods and junk foods.

My father travels a lot for business, and every time he goes to America, when he gets back, he complains about the food. His problem is that the American idea of good food, is lots of food. He does however give rave reviews to the catering at microsoft. I know for me at least, last year when I was in a dorm, at the beginning of the year I tried so hard to finish everything on my plate, I didn't want to be wasteful because all of a sudden I was aware of the cost of food.

anyway, lond story short. Portion size in the USA is out of controll, and psychologically, it's difficult to waste food when it's put in front of you. Consumption of pork has pretty much no relation to the obesity epidemic other than pork being a food.

According to Alton Brown, pork is completely safe to eat. things like trichinellosis are killed long before the meat even reaaches well done, and is even killed by being frozen. Also most pork today doent have anything in it to begin with.

And I dont know about cured pork products like bacon or ham, but I'm pretty sure that pretty much nothing survives the salting, brining, pickling, smoking, et cetera.

By the argument being put forward its claimed Jesus didnt say we could eat pork. Lets say thats true. He didnt say we couldnt either.

So by that argument, A non jewish Christian could eat pork.

YOu only need to reads Acts (which many muslims forget continues the gospels) which shows how the Jews and gentile Christians went through a hard period trying to figure if gentiles should follow jewish laws as Christians and vice versa.

The Qur’an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than 4 different places. It is prohibited in 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115.

"Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah." [Al-Qur’an 5:3]

The above verses of the Holy Qur’an are sufficient to satisfy a Muslim as to why pork is forbidden.

2. Consumption of pork causes several diseases

The other non-Muslims and atheists will agree only if convinced through reason, logic and science. Eating of pork can cause no less than seventy different types of diseases. A person can have various helminthes like roundworm, pinworm, hookworm, etc. One of the most dangerous is Taenia Solium, which is in lay man’s terminology called tapeworm. It harbours in the intestine and is very long. Its ova i.e. eggs, enter the blood stream and can reach almost all the organs of the body. If it enters the brain it can cause memory loss. If it enters the heart it can cause heart attack, if it enters the eye it can cause blindness, if it enters the liver it can cause liver damage. It can damage almost all the organs of the body.

Another dangerous helminthes is Trichura Tichurasis. A common misconception about pork is that if it is cooked well, these ova die. In a research project undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from Trichura Tichurasis, twenty two had cooked the pork very well. This indicates that the ova present in the pork do not die under normal cooking temperature.

The only reason that an Orthodox Jew would even consider eating pork is if he/she/they went to a dinner and the person cooked pork without knowing they were Jewish. It would be a worse offense to disrespect the person offering the food.

However, since we're discussing Orthodox Jews, and couple that with the fact that Orthodox Jews have a particular attire ===> evange's statement is completely erroneous.
