What did David see in Goliath? He was 6 cubits tall...scale armor (like a serpent)...(I have heard it said that the 5,000 shekels was textual variant of 6,000)...spear head six...there were lots of details to choose from but the bible records those...David took 5 stones and crushed his head...(then cut it off). Sounds like something else?

Women...your offspring will crush the head of the serpent.

well according to scripture the armour of saul was to heavy for him

Scripture says that David had not 'proved' the armour and weapons. No mention of them being too heavy for him. He was a shepherd boy use to wearing whatever clothes they wore, not being burdened down with armour. So, to David, he was not use to moving with the extra weight and you need to know that you can get some movement in them before you go out to combat. I don't think Saul would have looked at a scrawny kid and thought for one moment that his armour could fit David; just doesn't make sense. That'd be like me handing over my clothes to my niece who is a kid and suggesting that they might fit her.

It was made for Saul and there probably was an uncomfortableness for David to wear something not made for him and not something he normally wears.

I see no reason why it couldn't be that David was a fairly tall bloke, probably not as tall as Saul, but tall nonetheless and Saul would have had to have thought that there could have been a chance that his armour could have fit David. But David was use to pure clothing and a sling, not armour and a sword.

the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.

God gave the battle to David...not, his dexterity, strength, intelligence, etc...the power is from God.
Agree!......there are example ontop of example, where God wants to make sure everyone acknowledges it was Him!...... Abraham, Moses, Joshua, Gideon.......when God moves in His mighty Spirit and power, Its not the stomping and yelling, or the perfect notes hit by the trumpet players that cause tremors that shake the walls of Jericho, and Peter didn't place his feet so perfectly on the water that he was able some how to displace his whole weight and actually walk on water, I firmly believe David was a good shot and a skilled marksman when it comes to the sling, I just believe that the hand of God was holding the sling at the same time, to make sure that rock was sunk into the giants forhead, not an easy task for even the best sling thrower.

I will admit you make a good arguement, and it stands to reason the armour could of been a close fit

I never imagined the amazing insights you all have brought to the table regarding the five smooth stones, one of which killed the giant. That stone had to be travelling hard and fast to sink into the skull like that.

I Sam 17:49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.

amen..

David's faith in God caused him to look at the giant from a different perspective. Goliath was merely a mortal man defying an all-powerful God. David looked at the battle from God's point of view. If we look at giant problems and impossible situations from God's perspective, we realize that God will fight for us and with us. When we put things in proper perspective, we see more clearly and we can fight more effectively.

Romans 8:31 NIV
[ More Than Conquerors ] What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

If using a slingshot, it can be deadly. They have often used them in the Middle-East and they've made dents in tanks. We know from archeological findings that slingstones were not pebbles (as commonly depicted in retellings of this story). Rather, they were used to bombard city walls during seiges. David himself tells Saul in the story that he fought off lions and bears with the sling....and those projectiles could be slung at around 100 mph

The speed at which it can propel a stone is the equivalent of a bullet hitting a man, which would make sense as to why the stone sank into his forehead. For others perplexed at how that can be the case when the text says Goliath had a helment of brass (1 Samuel 17:5 ), the Septuagint supposes that the stone passed through the helmet, and sank into his forehead: Και διεδυ ὁ λιθος δια της περικεφαλαιας εις το μετωπον αυτου, "and the stone passed through his helmet, and sank into his skull." To some this has appeared perfectly improbable... but we are assured by ancient writers that scarcely any thing could resist the force of the sling.

As said best in Gill's Exposition of the Bible:

and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead; it is made a difficulty of how he should smite him on his forehead, when he had a helmet of brass upon his head, 1 Samuel 17:5; in answer to this Kimchi observes, that some say, that when David said he would give his flesh to the fowls of the air, at the mention of that he looked upwards, and what was upon his forehead fell backwards, and then David slung and smote him; or he might put back his helmet to talk with David, and hear and be heard the better; and having nothing to fear from an unarmed man, might neglect to put it forward again; or there might be some open space left in the helmet for him to look through, in at which the stone might pass; so the Targum renders it, he smote him in the house of his eyes, so the stone passed through the eye hole into his brain: but after all, supposing his forehead ever so well covered, as the stone slung by David was under a divine direction, so as to hit a person in motion, it came with a divine power, which nothing could resist; and supposing this, of which there need no doubt, it could as easily pass through the helmet of brass, as pierce into his forehead and sink there; nor can this be thought the least incredible, if what Diodorus Siculus (m) relates of the Baleares be true, that they were so dexterous at slinging, that they not only would sling stones bigger than others could, and were so directed, that they seldom missed their mark, being inured to it from their youth, but would even in battle break in pieces shields, helmets, and all kinds of armour, with which bodies were covered:

that the stone sunk into his forehead; and so into his brain, as a stone is immersed and sinks in water, when thrown into it; with such force did it go, and with so much ease did it make its way, through the direction and power of God:
and he fell upon his face to the earth; Jarchi observes, that it was most natural for him to have fallen backwards, being struck upon his forehead; but so it was, that David might have no trouble to cut off his head, for by this means he fell nearer to him.

Wow.. such force.. not only to go through a helmet but also made a great dent into the skull, just like a bullet.

So now I have got to thinking...

How far was David from Goliath?
How fast can a sling throw a stone?
How much force is necessary to penetrate a helmet and make a dent in a skull?
