The Bible states that the Israelites used slings as weapons of war.

2 Kings 3:25
King James Version (KJV)
25And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it.

1 Samuel 17:15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.

16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp of thy brethren;

To me, that reads; 'And David left Saul to go feed his father's sheep and then the Philistines came .... then Jesse sent David'. So, to me, David was feeding the sheep those 40 days. But anyway, this is a superfluous debate. :D

 My point was, I think it's incorrect to read the story as if David were in such a rush that "proving Saul's armor" couldn't be done. I think he could have tried it on, trained with it, etc. I think he didn't want to, for whatever reason. I also think there are tremendous Spiritual applications to this for us today ...

(For some reason I always missed that David was Saul's armor-bearer. That is my place in the Body, being an armor bearer. A dream G-d gave me about that, I mis-interpreted for a while ^_^)

Archaeologists are finding evidence that confirms these biblical stories. Slingstones were important weapons in an ancient army's arsenal.

At one excavation site in Israel, 10 miles north of Jerusalem, slingstones have been found in almost every area of the dig. Interestingly, the site is located in the territory given to the tribe of Benjamin. This tribe was known for an elite corps of slingers.
Judges 20:15-16
King James Version (KJV)
15And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men. 16Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.
Now is this bragging or what??
1 Chronicles 12:2
King James Version (KJV)
2They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow, even of Saul's brethren of Benjamin.
Scripture seems to indicate these guys were good, many of whom were able to use both hands.

I can both agree with this and disagree! :D Haha!

Looking on the internet for anything related to this.. I found this...

"After three seasons of excavation, we have found nearly three dozen slingstones. Most are roughly round and slightly over two inches in diameter, from the size of a billiard ball to a tennis ball."
--archaeologist Dr. Bryant Wood

the stones found

If the stones are about the same weight as a billiard ball or a little more, that can increase the speed and force that goes with it.

Whoa, those are some SERIOUS stones to be sent from a sling!! I think if a stone were the same size as a pool ball, it would weigh a LOT more than a pool ball. Deadly, no doubt.
