why are there so many evil people in the world?

Which is it? Alleviating suffering for others is not the same as advancing personal happiness.
They're intertwined. I can't imagine my own happiness not being enhanced by the reduction in others' suffering. Empathy is likely the key factor, there.

Nothing obvious about it. Many sane people do evil things.
Ah, but is evil itself sane?
And if I were to perceive evil as sane, what would that say about
my own mental stability?

One might consider crucifying Jesus an evil act, and
yet: "Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do."
What is sane about knowing not what one does?

Actually, helping others can be a thankless job with no effect but to depress the one who does it, particularly when it doesn't end well. Evil isn't about mental states. Insane people can be evil or good.

When I do things like that, it's usually because I know I would disappoint myself even more if I didn't even attempt it, compared to the possible disappointment I receive from doing it.

Well I don’t believe in sin but many people act in a evil way because they have decided that that is the best wast to get want they want.

The thing is, the word "evil" has been thrown around so
casually over the centuries that it has basically lost all
meaning.

In addition, a lot of what might be considered "evil"
behavior is simply the result of chemical imbalances in
the brain. These meat-suits we're running around in can
really mess with our heads -- literally. I merely
("merely" -- HAH!) struggle with depression on
occasion, and yet can say for a fact that there's a world
of difference between how I am -- and how I see others
around me -- when my serotonin levels are depleted and
when they're not. It ain't demons and it ain't the devil.
It's s-e-r-o-t-o-n-i-n. Plain and simple.

So before getting all Frank Peretti with the Good-vs-Evil
mentality, one needs to first consider what biochemical,
physiological, and psychological influences might be
involved. Then -- and *only* then -- can "woo" (in this
case, "woo" of the Christian variety) be considered a
possibility. IMO, of course.

And I say all this as a huge fan of "magical thinking" and
a love of the supernatural and the spiritual aspect. I
could probably follow my own advice above in some
things I'm experiencing (but the "woo" angle is,
admittedly, such fun, so I really can't fault others too
much for indulging in it! :D)

That is why their are believers, and unbelievers.
You cannot believe the scripture unless God allows you to. Your unbelief is the natural position of the ungodly.

Strange...the Muslim, the Hindu, the Jew would probably all tell me the same thing...

Making claims is easy. The real work is providing evidence for those claims.

Most major religions claim to have That Special
Something That No Other Religion Has. So the above
statement isn't really groundbreaking as far as that
goes.

He's not the only one who allegedly does so.
Islam has a hell too. We'd better hope that's not
the Correct Religion™ or we're doomed.

I wouldn’t necessarily say there are more “evil” people now as much as I would say the nicer people are more withdrawn.

With social media at an all time high and literally everything that’s wrong with America being blasted on the news and radio all the time, people are starting to lose faith in humanity and in others. I remember when I was a child and whole streets knew eachother and talking to your neighbors was a common thing. Now, it seems as though people don’t even trust their own neighbors. We just don’t see the good in the world anymore because people are drawn to the bad and it’s caused the nice ones to stop helping or being as social as they used to.
