Who Would You Vote For?

I'd take the athiest since, as others have said, religion and politics should be sepearate. Islam is one of the religions least likely to recognize a seperation of Church and State. It would be different if it was an Athiest and a Buddhist or something.

And it depends a bit on why he's an Athiest to me. If he has a healthy dose of scepticism, which seems to be a cardinal virtue of Athiests, it's a valuable asset for a politician.

Part of the reason I asked was that there seems considerable interest in the idea that Barak Obama is (or was) a Muslim, and this alone seems to be providing a reasonable basis to question his suitability as a presidential candidate.

And also, that I've seen it suggested that no professed atheist could go far in the US political system - that faith (ideally Christian) seems to be a fundamental requirement for many US voters.

It's curious to me, because politicians in my country barely ever make faith or religion an issue (aside from specifically religious parties). I don't think our Prime Minister is religious, but I don't know. The leader of the opposition goes out of his way to avoid answering the question 'do you believe in God' - he attends Church he says, but won't go further than that. I have no idea about the rest of them really. I know one is a Rastafarian. Another is a devout Christian (he leads a Christian party).

This is mainly directed toward the Christian members in here, but of course open to all...

Imagine a presidential primary for your political party of choice, you are presented with two candidates.

They are practically identical in all the ways that you can measure - the same expressed policies, views, values, etc...

The only real difference between the two, in the candidacy at least, is their religious views.

One candidate is Muslim, the other is an atheist.

Having to choose one, based entirely on their religious view, who would you choose?

You may vote now... I am interested to hear comments about why you might be inclined to choose one over the other.



Background:
I've seen it expressed here before that atheists are untrustworthy, as they lack morals. I've also seen it expressed that Muslims cannot hold positions of power as they hold a loyalty to their faith over country.

I do not believe there are any atheists in congress. And there certainly hasn't been an atheist president in the last century.

There is, I believe, one Muslim member of congress.

Atheist. They tend to make decisions based on reality.

I had this bright idea that if I found out where you live I could look her up but Chicago has a lot of women in office... not that I'm complaining about women in office, but if there were only one it would make the internet search a lot easier.

On a side note- I looked up "Chicago lesbian politician" and got an article about Barrack Obama.....
