Hi guys,
I'vebeenshown, asks:
Who cares about the age of the earth, or space?
I think we should all agree to put our thinking caps on as we answer this. First, let me explain that I am a YEC. I believe that the word of God is completely truthful and factual in all that it reveals to us. I understand that there are two schools of thought among Christians regarding this question. There are Christians who believe, basically, because of what mordern science has attempted to prove, that God surely must have worked out the creation through some form of evolutionary, million, billion year framework. Then there are Christians such as myself who readily accept that God created all that is within the physical realm in which we live in 6 literal days approximately 6,000 years ago. When I say 'all that is within the physical realm in which we live', I mean all that is upon, in and around the earth. Every star, every planet, every bit of dust or matter that is in all of the universe that we can see or not with our most powerful telescopes. All of it was created within 6,000 years or so.
Let's start off understanding that it is absolutely, unequivically impossible for both 'theories' to be correct. The earth and all of space is either about 6,000 years old or it is several million, billion years old. The two theories cannot coexist as 'truth'. So let's start.
The OP has posited a very good question. What does it matter? Why is it important? Who cares? Quite frankly, if we are to consider the question for its social implications or its scientific ramifications, I don't think it does matter. I can't really imagine that anyone does care. But, let's move outside of the social implications and the scientific ramifications. Instead let's look at the spiritual consequences. Let's not ask of all our friends and neighbors and co-workers, who cares? Let's go to our Creator and ask, who cares? Does God care what we believe?
What if I say, "Listen, I believe that there is something that we experience after death! I believe, because there is so much 'relgion' around the world that there has to be something that happens after we die. I believe that we may attain 'nirvana' or 'oneness with the cosmos' or 'eternal life' because so many people believe that something happens to us after we die. What I don't believe, is that there is only one way to attain whatever this 'promise' after this life is. I don't believe that some guy by the name of Jesus who walked upon the earth 2,000 years ago somehow magically made a way for me to enter 'God's kingdom' or 'eternal life' or whatever it is that Christians believe." Does God care what I believe? Does it matter, in any way, what I believe, to God? Well, what do we all think?
Here's what God's word says, and it is reported to be words that were spoken by this guy, Jesus:
John 3:18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
Hmm. Seems pretty straight forward that God says that anyone who doesn't believe in the Son is condemned. So, does it matter to God whether I believe the testimony of this man, Jesus?
Ok, now let's move to the issue at hand. Does it matter to God what we believe about the creation? We've already decided that it probably is of no value to our friends, relatives, co-workers, etc., but does it matter to God?
Isaiah 29:14 says: Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish."
Jeremiah 8:9 says: The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and trapped. Since they have rejected the word of the LORD, what kind of wisdom do they have?
The wisdom of the wise will perish. What does that mean and who are the 'wise'? The wise will be put to shame. Surely, God is not referring to believers who seek wisdom that begins with the fear of the Lord. God's word gives promise for that person. Who are the wise? Could the 'wise' possibly be those whose wisdom is based on man's knowledge? If I belive that the earth and all creation is millions or billions of years old, because of what 'science' has taught me, and it turns out that that isn't the 'truth', I'm I going to be put to shame. Will I find that all the 'intelligence of the intelligent' and 'wisdom of the wise' was wrong? Will God see me as faithful if I turned away from His truth, because I was swayed by this 'intelligence of the intelligent' and the 'wisdom of the wise'?
What does God mean when He says, "My righteous ones will live by faith!" Does it just mean that I must believe in this guy, Jesus? Or does it mean that I need to live by a faith that believes, despite what the 'intelligence of the intelligent' and the 'wisdom of the wise' would try to convince me is the truth, in the whole counsel of God's word?
So, I ask. What say you? Do you believe that it matters to God what we believe? It certainly seems to me that God warns us about the 'intelligence of the intelligent' and the 'wisdom of the wise' for more reason than just to believe that Jesus died for our sins. What say you?
God bless you.
In Christ, Ted.
