Several ways to put this question.......

"Is Being Non-Denominational better than being Denominational?"

"Is being Denominational better than being Non-Denominational?"

"As far as our walk with God goes, is there any difference between being Non-Denominational and being Denominational?"

"Are there any drawbacks (or benefits) from being either?"

I can only suggest that you study Christ's words, study everything in the New Testament about the early church, and do this with your heart and mind open to guidance by the Holy Spirit. Study, read, pray, and study some more.

Denominationalism has been the order of the day in Christendom ever since the apostasy that took place in the Early Church (3 John 9) and which led to the Dark Ages. The spirit of domination (the leaders of the church would rule or ruin) has been the bane of every denomination professing to be following the meek and lowly Jesus who had said, "It shall not be so among you." Matt.20:25. Even after the Reformation denominationalism (high-handed power) has continued this lording over God's heritage and it has proved to be a curse wherever it is exercised.

Before the second coming of Christ in glory, a revival of primitive faith and godliness will take place. Revelation 14:4 speaks of a people who, in these last days, will not be defiled with women, that is, with the various denominational churches of Christendom for these will be joined to the Head and they will be actuated by the Head only.

Jesus intends that no authority but His own shall be known in the soul in whom He dwells.

"God has a church. It is not the great cathedral, neither is it the national establishment, neither is it the various denominations; it is the people who love God and keep His commandments. Where Christ is even among the humble few, this is Christ's church, for the presence of the High and Holy One who inhabits eternity can alone constitute a church." E.G. White, Upward Look, 315.

Though millions who need to be healed will reject His offered mercy, not one who trusts in His merits will be left to perish for the merits of Christ's sacrfice are sufficient to plead before the Father in our behalf in order to receive all the blessings of the covenant of grace.

I always get a smile from posts like yours. It is really amusing to think that you sincerely believe that your denomination is not denominational - because it is God's one and only Church. If it is any consolation, you are in good company with many Mormons and Roman Catholics who believe exactly the same thing.

If and when you cease quoting the prophetess (Sister White) of your denomination and drop your identity as SDA, I will take you much more seriously.

bbbbbbbb, keep smiling. :)

The SDA organization could not be more denominational. In my previous post I quoted the prophetess herself stating that God had a church and that is was "not the various denominations" but those who love Him and keep His commandments. The Lord never intended for the Advent movement to become a denomination like the other denominations. It happened because the people fell into the Laodicean condition and ever since the church has been controlled by men. Repeatedly, especially between 1888 and 1903 the Lord called for an entire re-organization according to Gospel Order but the call was resisted.

"What we want now is a re-organization. We want to begin at the foundation and to build upon a different principle." 1901 General Conference Bulletin, p.25.

In 1895 the prophetess had stated these words:

"Men have taken unfair advantage of those whom they supposed to be under their jurisdiction. They were determined to bring the individuals to their terms; they would rule or ruin. There will be no material change until a decided movement is made to bring in a different order of things." Testimonies to Ministers, p.360.

It is true that at the 1901 General Conference reformatory steps were taken. They were to begin at the foundation and to build upon a different principle but it didn't last. Two years later these reformatory steps were reversed in General Conference and the leaders returned to the devisings of men: men's contitutions with their by-laws, policy book, church manual with rules and regulations, resolutions and elections by votes, establishing a hierarchy resembling the Mosaic order.

Gospel Order was rejected.

The same thing happened in the second century. The Mosaic Order was adopted and it led to the establishment of the Papal hierarchy.

The prophetess warned that the leaders of the SDA church were following in the track of Rome. All this can be read from the book Testimonies to Ministers, 362,363. The prophetess was even given a dream in which she saw the leaders of the SDA church walking toward the building she was in as a catholic procession and determined to put the breaks on all who would dare speak against their "holy order" which order is antagonistic to Gospel Order! This is found in Testimonies, Vol.1, 578.

In 1907 the Lord sent this solem testimony to the leaders of the SDA church:

"The self-confident management of men has resulted in putting God aside and accepting the devisings of men. If you allow this to continue your faith will soon become extinct." Testimonies to Ministers, p.481.

If in 1903 the leaders had not gone back to the devisings of men, the Lord could have finished the work and cut it short in righteousness according to the 1901 Gospel Order.

Years earlier, in 1895, the prophetess had given them this solemn warning:

"The high-handed power that has been developed as though position has made men gods makes me afraid and ought to cause fear. It is a curse wherever it is exercised. This lording it over God's heritage will create such a disgust of man's jurisdiction that a state of insubordination will result,.. But the Lord will raise up laborers who realize their own nothingness without special help from God." Testimonies to Ministers, 361.

In the same paragraph the prophetess compares the leaders of the SDA organization with the leaders of the Sanhedrin:

"At the time of the first advent of Christ to our world, the men who composed the Sanhedrin exercised their authority in controlling men according to their will. The souls for whom Christ had given His life to free from the bondage of Satan were brought under bondage to him in another form." Ibid, 361.

That is why the prophetess declared that "When light goes forth to lighten the earth, instead of coming up to the help of the Lord, they will want to bind about His work to meet their narrow ideas. Let me tell you that the Lord will work in this last work in a manner very much out of the common order of things and in a way that will be contrary to any human planning... God will use ways and means by which it will be seen that He is taking the reins in His own hands. The workers will be suprised by the simple means that He will use to bring about and perfect His work of righteousness." Testimonies to Ministers, 300.

These words indicate that there will be a small nucleous of people, a remnant if you will, who will refuse to be controlled by men (1 Cor.7:23) and who will be so filled with the Spirit (Eph.3:19; 5:18) that no authority shall be known in them but Christ's. These will be vessels fit for the Master's use. The prophetess speaks of these men and women whom the Lord will raise up and through whom He will bring about and perfect His work of righteousness:

"We shall come in repentance and contrition, with a despairing sense of our own finite weakness, and learn that we must daily apply to the merits of the blood of Christ that we may become vessels fit for the Master's use." Signs of the Times, May 19, 1890.

"Christ looked forward to the time when the Holy Spirit, as His representative, would come and do a wonderful work in and through His merits." Testimonies to Ministers, 402.

For "Looking unto Jesus and trusting in His merits we appropriate the blessings of light and joy and peace in the Holy Spirit." Testimonies, Vol.5, 744.

God bless. :)

Thank you for this information. I was quite unaware of this history. I guess my question for you now is why you remain in the SDA. Thanks.

Thank you for this information. I was quite unaware of this history. I guess my question for you now is why you remain in the SDA. Thanks.

Your welcome. :) I am still an SDA but I do not support the present order of things any more than Jesus and His disciples supported the work of the Sanhedrin and yet they were still able to labor within the confines of Israel to seek for the lost sheep of Israel. They did as long as they could. As we all know Jesus' personal ministry ended at the crucifixion and the work of the apostles for the Jewish church ended at the stoning of Stephen, three and a half years after the crucifixion of Christ. Following the great persecution (Acts 8:1), the apostles and their Jewish converts were forced to turn to the Gentiles.

At the stoning of Stephen the Jews sealed their final rejection of God's mercy. That was the rejection of the second and final call of the parable of Matt.22 to the bidden ones. The first call had been given before the crucifixion and that call had also been rejected.

However Jesus spoke this parable more for our time than for His. The parable began its final enactment with the rise of the Advent movement in 1844. The work of finishing the work upon the earth was not accomplished then because of unbelief on the part of the Advent people as recorded in the book The Great Controversy, 457,458. The people fell into the Laodicean condition as described in Revelation chapter 3.

At the 1888 General Conference the people were invited to receive the righteousness of Christ (wedding garment) by laying right hold upon the merits of His shed blood. But the message was resisted as predicted in the parable. That was the first call. In 1901 the prophetess declared, "We will have to remain in this world because of insubordination many more years." Evangelism, p.606.

I believe we are now living in the time of the second and final call of that parable before the message will spread like fire in the stubble to all the world as represented by the third call of the parable. At the end of the third call, when the mission of the Gospel shall be completed, the great final test (death decree) will accomplish the final separation between the good and the evil and their destiny will be forever fixed. Probation will close and the people of God will enter in to the time of Jacob's trouble and be translated without seeing death while the rest of the world will enter into the great time of trouble coinciding with the seven last plagues.

God bless,

Is denomination fact or philosophy? Its a matter of discernment in gods word. Each group believes they have the true doctrine of Christ and sometimes its their discernment that creates their ceremony. Example phrase, when that which is perfect has come. Some say it is the bible and thus there is no longer gifts of the spirit. Some believe it is reference to Christ having nothing to do with doing away with gifts. That phrase alone has been the root of denominational dividing in itself.

The Jews sealed their final rejection with the stoning of Steven? Not at the cross? 1888 was Christs wedding garment and receiving the merits of Christs blood? I think you have it backward as to Jews becoming gentiles. It is all who come to Christ is the seed of Abraham and part of the body of Christ. Did sister White rewrite the bible? I think that this has transformed into far more than she intended. Not touching this one will remove thread. Thank you God bless.

It depends on you. Which way brings you closer to God? Which are you more comfortable with?

They are different, but I cannot see any way to quantify "better". If you belong to a denomination, it is improbable that you will agree with every position of the denomination. So you have to decide what is important. Can you live with the difference, or is the difference critical to your walk with God?

A benefit of denominational is having a worshipping community with a consensus of belief and practice. Part of being a Christian, IMO, is participating in a Christian community. Denominational provides commonalities and organization necessary for a community.

But really, it is up to you and which path you are more comfortable with in finding God.

No. Followers of Jesus continued to worship in synagogue for years after the Resurrection. The Jerusalem disciples considered themselves Jews and tried to "enlighten" their fellow Jews to the "truth". They hoped to convince their fellow Jews that Jesus was the Messiah. Their fellow Jews hoped that the disciples would come to realize that Jesus was not the Messiah. So the Jews didn't seal their final rejection until after the stoning of Steven when they added phrases to the worship service that excluded the new Christians.

The process was similar to Joseph Smith, Mary Baker Eddy, Martin Luther, and John Calvin trying to enlighten their denominations that they had new truth. For a while, their fellows accepted them as members of the original congregation, but eventually rejected them and thus we have the founding of new denominations.

Am wary of ND's for the simple reason that their belief system is built upon the Pastors understanding of the Bible and his persuasiveness in ensuring his belief is the Churches belief. At least with Denominational Churches you know or should know what your getting into and is less prone to change based on who the pastor is. Of course some ND's have a good and humble pastor and things work out great - and some not so much. Although I don't agree with everything the Reformed Churches believe I respect that their all on the same page and folks should get a somewhat consistent theological view.

I think these terms are used so confusingly

first of all if a Church is called "non-denominational" then it has a denomination ("non-denominational")

the issue to me is if we are in full communion with the Biblical Church (the Catholic Church)

Why would you consider the Catholic church the biblical church? No huge debate intended seeking knowlage.

Both have their advantages and problems. This is really evidenced by the faith icons here at CF.There are people pushing a clear denomination stance/FB who refuse to identify with their church. To me this claims by itself their church is wrong and they know it.

This discussion would be great if it were consistant within christianity, what ever that may be.

Sometimes I think non-denom can get a little cultish about "outsiders" and whatnot. I hear people go on and on about Pastor says this and Pastor says that but what's the Bible say? As long as the non-denominational does not interpret the Bible in a new and exiting way that nobody ever heard of before it's fine. I guess it makes me nervous because of the accountability. In a denomination the Preacher is resbonsible to a council or a group of trustees or both. SOme churches the Paster is also literally the CEO and President and has all authority over all money and all activities and will convince the congrigation it should be that way and don't question the Pastor or you question God etc.

Well you could say the same thing about any denomination, all though they answer to their conference they still have pastors or priest that are in local control. The main difference between the two is Biblical interpretation. Denomations believe in the same basic perspective ,with non denom. It varies from church to church. I believe that labels automatically exclude people even though two churches of same denomation can have a different outlook. Certain religious structures are predicted so they have a disposition to drive out those who question the logic of their beliefs. Example thinking a man can forgive your sin or become christ through some mystical way, or thinking you can pray to dead saints and some how they will answer. I cannot be live any one would think they could change Gods law to create a all powerfull church with a man who's authority is considered Christ on earth. At least the small churches who's pastors are self righteous don't lead millions to damnation.
