does fossilization preserve the bones longer than the bones can last independently?

yes. after the the blood vessels, fat etc breaks down, water carrying minerals seeps into the pores and strengthens the bone.

in open air for example, the bones will become a lot more brittle.

right, but fossilization still takes a long time. millions of years.
Excuse me, but under the right conditions something can fossilize in 5-100 years.

you're right. i just assumed you would provide a source based on science. here's a book on fossilization by 2 scientists in the USGS
