does fossilization preserve the bones longer than the bones can last independently?

yes. after the the blood vessels, fat etc breaks down, water carrying minerals seeps into the pores and strengthens the bone.

in open air for example, the bones will become a lot more brittle.

right, but fossilization still takes a long time. millions of years.
Excuse me, but under the right conditions something can fossilize in 5-100 years.

QV please:
FOSSIL YEARS: TENS, THOUSANDS OR MILLIONS?—Does fossilization really take millions of years?

The fact that something is fossilized does not mean that it is millions of years old. In fact, scientists know that fossilization can take place rather rapidly under the right conditions; quick burial, the right amounts of water, and suitable minerals.

Conditions for fossilization were ideal during the Flood. Researchers have discovered that bones, wood and other objects can fossilize in relatively short periods of time (e.g., 5 to100 years), if the conditions are right. Fossilization does not take millions, or even thousands, of years.

i'd prefer a peer reviewed science journal or something of the like.
Then find it yourself.

You said it took millions of years ... without providing 'peer reviewed science'; and now you have the gall to challenge my reply?

I say it can take 5-100 years and have provided a source for why I believe it ... at your request.

That's more than you did.

you're right. i just assumed you would provide a source based on science. here's a book on fossilization by 2 scientists in the USGS

On this chart, the youngest index fossil is 0.5 million years old,NOT 5 to 100 years.
