Here in the Western 'Burbs of Chicago, we're finally breaking out of the deep freeze. Tonight is still going to be a bit cold, down to 8F, tomorrow will get to 20F-- a bit cooler than today which did get just above freezing-- but early next week we see temps approaching 40s and 50s if the liars on the weather station are to be believed. Flooding is likely to be a problem with melting snow, rain and frozen ground giving no place for the water to go. I'm on high ground here, but some of the roads I have to use are not so well favored.

H'm:  I'll have to change my post again. If 8F is "a bit cold" our 3C, which I think is about 37F, must be quite mild!

Here in Chicagoland, cold varies quite a bit. Thank Lake Michigan for that. Near the lake, it's warmer-- often, downtown Chicago temps don't get below 0 F, and on the same night, Aurora Illinois may get down to 20 below zero F at the airport there. They're farther from the lake-- by about thirty miles-- and the airport is in a depression in the general landscape there.

At that, the folk up in Minnesota think we Chicagoans are soft. Ask the folk who live in International Falls*, Minnesota, where lows of 40 below (doesn't matter whether it's C or F, they both agree at this point) and a high of 20 below zero F is expected during the winter. That's the actual thermometer reading, not the wind chill. Wind chill---- well, maybe we'd better not discuss that, the readings are beyond belief for anyone who's never experienced that.

Right now, beautiful downtown Villa Park, Illinois: 12F, clear skies. High will be 23F, low for tonight 4F. Ditto for tomorrow.

*For those of you who have ever watched Rocky and Bullwinkle: International Falls is the real town that served the purpose for the cartoon "Frostbite Falls" where our heroes call home.

Edit; add-on: Just for giggles I decided to look up Aurora, Illinois. Right now, 9F, going up to 20F today. Tonight's low predicted to be 4 below zero F. Distance from the lake and terrain make the difference, it could be ten degrees colder than that in DeKalb, Illinois tonight.

Our standard weather for most of the year is cold.

Today is staying true to form.

It always amazes me what differences there can be over short distances!

I suppose Minnesota and the Dakotas have the typical "continental" weather system of cold winters and hot summers, and you get some of that in Illinois, albeit it with the moderating effects of the lake.

Our weather in the UK is tempered by the Gulf Stream although it can be quite cold when we get Artic weather from the NE. Today it has been a few degrees above freezing, wet but not too windy.

I think the only change we get is if we are having "Light Snow" or "Heavy Snow"

The Good news is we have not heard of any catastrophes on the Reservations. A donation program for propane at Pine Ridge has gotten good response and it seems that most of the elderly have propane heat now.

Getting ready to pitch the tent on high ground and beginning construction of a log raft.

Today was sunny and warm, high about 45F. Tomorrow may get into the 50s, with thunderstorms. Rain on top of all that melting snow, and frozen ground so the water has nowhere to go---- you never have a DUKW when you really need one.

The weather forecast temps show about 50F;
my living room seems to have an icy blast around my legs.:doh:

Roll back the carpet and spread newspaper neatly beneath
OVERLAP the last piece by @ one-third of the sheet [?]
roll out the carpet over them

who'd have thought a sheet of paper could insulate so-well

:D

If you wear trousers / slacks... wear pj trousers beneath them ;)

A towel wrapped into a cord and placed by the front door has served to block drafts in the front room here.

I've had to be careful when I stop my van for some rest. Positioning the van so the wind comes from the right side is critical because cold winds seem to blow through the door handle fittings on my left door, freezing my legs.

Tonight-- high winds, fog, heavy rain, snow later-- if it's yucky, it's happening tonight.
