  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's on your mind?

Brian Stanley has a significant chapter on Watchman Nee in his Christianity in the Twentieth Century.

He was the man. Imprisoned by the communists and still he had heart.

Thank you for sharing the link. He had a beautiful ministry and left incredible works behind. I began reading them several years ago.

I remember seeing his name in my dad's library. It's just one of those names that catches your eye. But I didn't read him until I came to faith, many years later. When I began thinking of books I might read, his name immediately popped into my mind because "Watchman Nee" was just embedded! ^_^ I was not disappointed!

I was going to make it plural. :D

How about this, what would you recommend? Is there a specific order you believe is best?

You know, I have a very limited reading range. It's all philosophy or theology. There are so many good classics I have not read. I am still working my way through Brothers Karamazov, which I chose to read in order to spread out my horizon.

I will say, I just read Francisco de Asuna's The Third Spiritual Alphabet and I am still gleaning the harvest. I'm so grateful for good friends who recommended good books. :)

I meant Nee

Hahaha, that was awkward. Sorry. The Spiritual Man. Classic

Brothers Karamazov is good, but I felt Crime and Punishment was better. The Idiot is a good introduction to his writing

See, you know. I don't. The only reason I chose Brothers is that it has theological import, i.e. "The Grand Inquisitor." I guess I wasn't stretching my horizon far enough, haha. :)

I hope to finish Proust this year. I’ve been dragging my heels

I guess some things are worthy, but still take work. ;)

Excellent choice! That’s my favorite.

The pace is slow. I wanted him to get on with things! I read the Russians in batches in the winter.

Yes. It’s part of the reading challenge. I’m scaling back due to school and my tempo is off. I read faster with a higher goal.

What gems are you chewing on in your usual genres?

You wanted Ivan to get on with things!? Oh, my  haha

Yeah, winter makes sense. Everything seems more "Russian" in winter.

You are one motivated individual! All the respect.

I'm about finished with Gregory Palamas The Triads. Hans Urs von Balthazar Prayer <--- a jewel if there ever was one. Ball: Complete Book of Home Preserving, Ed. Judy Kingry and Lauren Devine. I'm reading and anticipating doing, lol.:)

The idea that prophecy today in the grace age we live in is only supposed to be positive and never alarming or speak of judgment is a total lie and fabrication of the devil. Here's what the Bible says:

God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For God does not show favoritism.

So there's the two categories. You want a blessed word? Do good. If you want to rebel and be evil? Get a word of judgment. We're living in the last days and so many people are heaping to themselves teachers who will tickle their ears and tell them what they want to hear. There destruction doesn't slumber though.

Not exactly. *lol The pacing is much slower than his other books.

You are one motivated individual! All the respect.

Aww, thank you. :)

The Lord is shifting my focus and forcing me to narrow more. I may aim for 75 titles next year to slow things down. I did 100 last year and it was hard. It felt like a slog. I'm doing 150 now and its better. Reducing my reading will free up time for creativity and other pursuits.

I'll check them out! Ignore my previous comment. :p

Let me know your thoughts on Ball. I've never tried their recipes. If you're up for it, the Master Preserver training is online. What are you putting up?

I figured I'd miss the season due to an injury. But a local farmer sent an email offering boxes of tomatoes and fruit. I'm in for the Roma's! :D

I haven't decided. I'm still trying to make up my mind on water bath or pressure cooker. I'm thinking pressure cooker because the stuff I really want to can generally calls for one. Which do you use?

I have a water bath and pressure canner. I don't use it for cooking. I have an Instant Pot for that. I'll be cursing the tomatoes before I'm done. Removing the skin is a pain.

Make the items you'll enjoy the most. :)

This song started playing in a dream, and I was so surprised, I woke. I spent a few hours foraging rose hips and am trimming them into bowls for dehydrating (for tea) and juicing (for jelly... assuming I'm able to get enough). It's been a pleasant day.

I second this. My mother went through the course while she was pregnant with me (it was quite the joke in the class about me being the youngest Master Food Preserver), and passed on the knowledge to me from quite a young age. Still, I ought to go through it sometime in case there are things I've missed.

That's heartwarming to hear your mother went through the program with you in her womb. I've experienced something similar.
