By the way, forgive me for not saying this sooner. Welcome to our little singles commune, Jeff.
For the first time in my life, I oddly was not embarrassed to answer this when the conversation started going around in a public place outside of my inner circle of friends, but, all of a sudden my coworkers in the lab started talking about their sex lives, and - I guess jokingly? - the short-statured Hispanic girl who I think is only a few years younger than me, Kay, just started asking everyone else in the room one by one when was their last time they hooked up (I know I was new and would presumably be uncomfortable with being a part of this, but I felt I had to make allowances since the others working on second shift have all known each other for a very long time, and it is easy to get comfortable and very casually talk about stuff like this with each other; besides, I myself have become a little less prudish than I used to be a few years ago - not that there's anything wrong with being a prude, mind you). Jamie is like, "last December", and she said she is now determined to stay out of meaningless hookups and short-term relationships, which the others encouraged her for, and Favian is jolly and rotund Italian guy, I think, who is married, so he just goes, "um, recently?"
Finally Kay is silent for a moment after Favian answers her question, and I hear her go, with this perfectly self-aware tone of scandalousness, "... What about you, Will?"
Now, I've been silent all throughout this conversation, just trying to stay out of it and keep to my work merely because I have too much of it to not try to put my full focus into keeping up with everyone else, especially as a newbie - however quickly I have been catching on to it all - but I quickly decide to play it cool and without even looking up from where I was entering in lab results into the database, I say simply "I am a virgin. Thank you."
.... Immediately I was a little worried that my tone came off as being very prideful and haughty about it, but in the next second I hear Kay whistle in that way that guys whistle at pretty girls to show her approval of my answer and then Favian and Jamie cheer, one of them (I think Jamie) saying something like "That's what I'm talking about! Go, Will!"
... A rather unexpected response. But I should be grateful for it.
I guess it goes to show that no matter how casual a subject like sex might seem to conservative believers in this day and age, there are still a lot of people that, even if they themselves have sexually active pasts outside of marriage, they still value physical purity and encourage it in those who still possess it. Besides, even if for the sake of argument the ways of Christ weren't against self-righteous pride, I really don't think one has a right to gloat about his purity if he doesn't even have to worry about the temptation coming his way in the first place.
(I also noticed all of this scandalous banter appears to always go on in the lab when the supervisor isn't in the room to overhear. ^_- )
