I believe I'm 1/8 Cherokee on my mum's side. Don't know about dad's side. My great grandmother on mum's side was full blooded (at least that's the rumour). Her name was Cynthia. They are from the Alabama area. On dad's side, he claims my great grandfather was part NA. Unfortunately, in both of these cases I don't have enough info to verify this. However, I know that there has to be some NA blood in these veins because I feel more connected to this part of me than anything else. I have visited the Navajo, Hopi, Zuni in the US Southwest and the Haida in BC Canada. Wonderful times I've had. Bless you all!

What a wonderful, eye opening thread this is! What spirit moves the indian native blood to such a feeling about themselves. I have Cherokee ancestors, on my father's side. He was so dark skinned, with black hair and dark eyes, and the Cherokee features have shown up in his sons and grandchildren. I have always been just a little amazed at my own affinity for forests and the elements and most of all, animals, as far back into my childhood as I can remember.

Wasn't it Chief Joseph who wrote that letter to the great White Father in Washington? I have it somewhere in my reseach folios and will try to quote some of it later.

Well, you are all so beautiful, and the proud youths posting here are delightful.

In the house of long life,
there I wander.
In the house of happiness,
there I wander.
Beauty before me,
with it I wander.
Beauty behind me,
with it I wander.
Beauty below me,
with it I wander.
Beauty above me,
with it I wander.
Beauty all around me,
with it I wander.
In old age traveling,
with it I wander.
On the beautiful trail I am
with it I wander.

I am 1/8 Cherokee. My great grandma, Mary Ellen Deal, was full blooded Cherokee. I am very proud of my Cherokee blood and consider myself Indian. I have a real love for my Native people and I feel the need to be connected to nature and it's creatures although I'm not as good with animals as I'd like.

I'm trying to get registered with the Cherokee tribe of NC but I am not sure that I can as it's a matter of wheather her name is on the Dawes/Jones rolls. Anyone else have this problem? Also, Anyone know of a way for me to get involved in powows and Christian NA communities without being part of the tribe? My heart longs to better know this part of me that I'm so proud of.

Wow - same problem here. My Dad is very secretive about our heritage and does not provide any information about his mother & great grandmother so I can find out if they're on the dawes roll. My wifes great grandmother was full blood cherokee and her Mom also has lineage of Powatan/ Chief Powhatttan. Not enough Powhattan blood to register but should be Cherokee.
I do know there were some eastern Cherokee who had enough blood quantum but are not on any lists because they integrated into society and shunned their heritage after the trail of tears. I know my family is such an example.
We really do need native benefits, especially now since my wife is pregnant and we have so very little...

As far as powwows anyone can get involved. I know non natives who are very active in them. All you have to do is go to one in your area and talk to some people there. Try to avoid the commercial ones - look more for the traditional ones that aren't all about making money and "selling" native culture....

Yeah, my dad is working on finding info on his grandmother but it's a complicated search. She lived at Holden beach NC and I have the feeling that since she married a white man and didn't live on the rez she probably didn't sign the rolls. I think it's unfair that because I have a high enough blood quantum as do my brothers and my son but we are unable to be part of the tribe unless by some miracle I'm wrong.
Thanks for the info about powows. Does anyone here know of any that take place in or around Charlotte NC or any websites where I could find out?

Choctaw, but you would never know it by looking at my very pale skin. My great great grandmother was Choctaw. My family has done nothing to learn about their ancestry. I am interested, though, but I am not going to get any information from my family. I am also Welsh and French (which probably accounts for the pale skin, huh?).

I've tried Muktuk before but didn't like it. Thought it was really rubbery, but maybe there's parts of the whale that are better? Liked the Seal though - very rich & fishy; fills you up good! I'm sure they hunt seals up there too. I knew a few folk from villages but I lived in Southeast AK. So I tried these things at a Potlatch.
