Sin is not the transgression of the law, but rather, sin is to be lawless.

Sin is not what we do, but rather, a condition we're in.

Many people use 1 John 3:4 of the KJV to teach that sin is the transgression of the law but the original meaning of the verse is that sin is lawlessness, in other words, without God's influence in our lives.

KJV 1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

NKJ 1 John 3:4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.

RS 1 John 3:4 Every one who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.

NAS 1 John 3:4 Everyone who commits sin commits lawlessness, for sin is lawlessness.

Jesus became sin yet He never once committed a sin. This is a huge thing to grasp in order to understand that sin is a condition we're in, not an act that we do althought the acts that we do are sinful.

To be lawless is to be without God's influence in our daily lives. Jesus became sin on the cross when He became sepatrated from His Father. In the same way we are sin because we are seprated from our Father.

Sin is the absence of the Spirit of God within us.

The Spirit is sometimes equated with water. To be sin is to be without water, in other words, dust. Jesus, while He was still alive on the cross, was brought to dust or spiritual death without God, in other words, He became dust.

Psalms 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death.

The color red is also equated with being sin. Adam or mankind is identified as being red.

In the New Covenant we are indwelled with God's Spirit. The foundation of the New Covenant is not the law of the old, but rather, the living words of Christ guiding our every thought and action. It's a new a living way.

The law of the old was given until faith came.

Faith is not something we do, but rather, faith is something we possess, it's the mind or thoughts of Christ. This faith comes by hearing not the words of God, but rather, the words of Christ.

Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

It's the words of Christ that will judge us in the end, not the old law.

John 12:48 "He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.

The law on stone is a ministry of death and condemnation but the words of Christ is a ministry of life and peace.

The old law governed the old man. But under the New Covenant the old man is dead.

Now, if one is dead the law has no authority over you.

Romans 7:1-6 Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another, even to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God. For when we were in the flesh, the passions of sins which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

So what law should govern us now that we are dead to the old? The law of Christ, in other words, His words living and abiding in us teaching us to love and serve one another.

Galatians 6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

1 Corinthians 9:21 To those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, that I might win those who are without law.

Sin for the New Covenant Christian is not identifed by the law, but rather, anything that is not of faith is sin. In other words, anything that is not of THE faith, the faith of Christ, is sin.

For the New Covevant believer sin becomes the resistance of the living words of Christ guiding our hearts and minds for daily living.

James 4:13-17 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow, we shall go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and also do this or that." But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do, and does not do it, to him it is sin.

Let us hear and follow the voice of the Shepherd, in other words, the words of Christ for it is in this that He gives us eternal life.

John 10:27-28 "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.
