  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What Should The US Do To React To Iran?

We've signed a treaty with Mexico and Canada.
After mocking Reagan's treaty. There is no doubt in Canada that the US will invade if we shut off the taps or demand more than the little we are now getting for our resources. That is how US friendship works.

Iran has again escalated by launching cruise missiles from Iran. It is not clear where the drones were launched from, but that matters little. Most of the oil capacity will be back on line soon. the effect on world oil prices has been minimal, and will be less whenever the US or others increase production or releases some reserves.

WHAT SHOULD THE US DO?
Congress doesn't know. There is no easy answer for anyone but the neocon hawks like Bolton who have wanted military strikes for a decade. Trump is waiting. He is consulting with Saudi Arabia, and will see the results of the Israeli election before acting.

One suggestion is that we give the Saudis all the military aid that they want, and have ZERO direct involvement by the US, other than the occasional advisor (as in Iraq). This theory would have withdraw from Afghanistan. After all, there is no real country, just 3 countries being forced together by the US.

We should sell both sides as much military weapons as they want. Then sit back and wait to see who wins.

We are capitalists and should start acting like capitalists. There is money to be made from war and we should be making as much money as we can. After all, they are both Muslim nations and we hate Muslims.

We do want to control the flow of oil on the planet. After all, that was why we invaded Iraq. It is a win/win for us if we sell them both weapons and then take over their oil fields after they are too weakened from fighting each other to stop us.

Typical of the self serving will of man over loving all as self. Under those conditions we deserve annihilation

Chinese have a better idea. Nuke 'em all then send in a surplus of expendable population to harvest nuke free underground oil.

Use Obama's time machine and rejoin the Iran deal, so Iran will limit its nuclear production, but can sell its oil, so it doesn't get financially desperate and pushed into trying to disrupt the rest of the world's oil trade by seizing tankers and bombing oil facilities.

No, we should not. We are Israelis ally, they are not ours. We would gain nothing from the engagement.

So we should only do good things when they benefit us? Do you support wars for oil?

I don't know that we 'deserve' annihilation or not. That 'loving all as self' thing seems to have been pretty much a non-starter from the beginning....at least since the Fourth Century.

It has been known for some time that the planet can't support an ever increasing human population. We can either let masses of people pathetically starve to death or give them the option of dying valiantly defending their country.

In either case, we can't let someone else control oil because most of the people on the planet hate us for being the greatest and if someone else controlled the oil, they could turn our spigot off.

How noble. Do they get a flag to fly?

It's been considered here.

I think both countries already have flags. But I'm good with them developing individual battle flags.

That we have considered turning off the spigot to others is why we know others might consider it against us. It pretty much is the mantra of America, "Do unto others before others do unto us...and make a profit while doing it".

Tweet that we're locked and loaded, backtrack and do nothing, and then say we're waiting on the orders Saudi Arabia gives us.

I can't imagine giving such deference - say -to one of our NATO allies.

To answer the the op question: The United States should stay out of it...and go one step further, pull our military OUT of Saudi Arabia. The Saudis have more than enough firepower to take care of themselves.

Honestly I don't know who to believe because United States is known for trying to make Wars happen by false rumors and even sabotage. Thankfully JFK was a good enough man to not want to utilize such sabotage.

True but I was referring to turning off our spigot to you :)

You need two parties willing to reach an accord. Egypt and Israel were at the time while Saudi Arabia and Iran are not now so inclined. Unlike the secular Egyptian and Israeli governments of the time, both Saudi Arabia and Iran are very much tied to powerful religious factions ( fundamentalist Sunni and Shiite) that view the other as apostates and have no tolerance for any compromise.
Yes, I understand that reason to think it would be hard to make work.

One of the amazing things about the Camp David Accord is that Egypt and Israel had fought several hot wars within the lifetimes of most of the people, and both leaders.

Carter was caught by surprise with that move engineered by Mossad.

ding, ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!

The US need to get its troops out of harm's way. Our troops in the homeland of Islam holy sites is blasphemy to so many Muslims. We MUST turn our Saudi bases over to the Saudis and leave.

For decades our policy was to support whoever we needed to in order to try to keep a balance in the region. Reagan even backed Iran when Iraq was getting too strong. From a geo-political perspective, the US wanted to prevent either the Sunni or Iran from becoming too strong.

For now, I'm OK with continuing to support our "allies" in the region (the Sunnis and Israel), and to oppose Iran's terrorist activities with heavy sanctions. Just going this far is a major change from the similar policies of Obama and Trump.

To answer the the op question: The United States should stay out of it...and go one step further, pull our military OUT of Saudi Arabia. The Saudis have more than enough firepower to take care of themselves.
