  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is the obligation of the Christian?

Here's a "biblical teaching" for you:

copyChkboxOff.gif
Act 2:38 - Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Take your objections up with the writer of Acts.

The Holy Spirit guides us and enables us to do what pleases God. People can still greave the Holy Spirit. Paul warns children of God of greaving the Holy Spirit in Ephesians 4:30 then proceeds to explain in Ephesians 5 that they can actually receive the wrath of God intended for the sons of disobedience and have no inheritance in the kingdom of God if they live a sinful lifestyle. The Holy Spirit is like a compass always pointing the way to God. He doesn’t steer the boat. If we fall asleep at the wheel we could wake to find ourself way of course or even worse shipwrecked.

The assembly of yourselves together can mean any type of Christian fellowship. Confessions can be done directly to God. The bread of life discourse is a metaphor. No one received the Eucharist for the first 4000 years after creation and yet many are still saved.

If the "bread of life discourse is a metaphor" can you point to some authority, or anyone else for that matter, who for the first one thousand years of Christianity agrees with you on that?

No I can’t. But I can point to indications in the scriptures that support my statement if you like. For example the bread of life discourse in John 6 Jesus’ intention is to separate the sheep from the goats. We know that Jesus often spoke in parables especially in the presence of nonbelievers which He did specifically say there were many nonbelievers present for the bread of life discourse. The more nonbelievers grumbled about eating His flesh and drinking His blood the more He pushed the idea. The end result was He ended up pushing away the nonbelievers and was left only with those who believed. Eating His flesh and drinking His blood was metaphorical for receiving Him within them and receiving His atonement. Jesus mentioned receiving Him several times throughout the NT and also mentioned Him abiding in us. At the Last Supper Jesus did not say they were receiving the bread and wine for salvation He said “do this in remembrance of Me” as a symbol or token of their faith and obedience.

Jesus said time and again throughout John 6 "unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you", etc. The synoptic gospels have Jesus saying "this is my body" and "this is my blood". Paul states that he received the same from the Lord and identifies the Eucharist as the body and blood of the Lord.

So all four gospels and Paul's letters are consistent in that teaching. There is an unbroken chain of commentaries from the Church Fathers down to the present that identify the Eucharist as the body and blood of Christ. The Church Fathers are unanimous in that same view. All of the original apostolic Churches have taught the same since the beginning.

Now you are asking me to set all of that aside and simply take your word for it?

I'm really not sure what you're saying here. Do you consider believing, being baptized, and being chrismated as somehow forcing God to do something?
Could you try to express what or why you don't understand what was said? I didn't read anything that could mean forcing God to do anything. So I truly don't comprehend your second sentence in relation to the quoted post.

Well can we first determine what we mean by being born again? According to all the teachings of Christianity, being born again is a process of water baptism and chrismation. Afterwards one is expected to participate in the sacramental life of the Church.
That is religion. Being born again isn't a result of what we do when it come to religious rites/activity.

I've been absent from CF for about 6 years so I am out of the loop, but I can guess who is stirring the pot. I pray for them frequently, but I recognize that even though some people are earnestly searching for God's favor they will never find Him because God has blinded them. Only God's elect will find Him.
I think people have more to do with blinding others than God does.

Well you could sum up everything that is required in Jesus’ two commandments love God with all your heart soul and mind and love each other as He loves us. But that actually entails a lot. This means we must obey God’s commandments and bear fruit (do good works). These are just a few of many examples that obedience is required. Matthew 7:21-23, Ephesians 5:1-6, Galatians 5:19-21. These are a few examples that good works are required John 15:1-10, James 2:14-26, Matthew 25:31-46, Matthew 3:10.
Isn't what you're really saying is we should ignore the NT and new covenant and live by the the covenant no one could keep given to Israel at Sinai?

That's the "forcing God to do something" post.
I think the poster is discussing the results of being born again opposed to how to be born again. Being a Christian grants many things. It doesn't manipulate God. Thus your version of being born again is an attempt to take advantage of Christian blessings without Jesus as Savior. Religious rites have nothing to do with being born again. Its not what we do.

Stephen and John the Baptist were followers of Christ who never received the Eucharist, neither did Moses, Abraham, Jacob, Noah, Methuselah, or anyone for the first 4000 years after creation. Are they condemned to the lake of fire?

I'm very sorry but I don't try to understand the rhyme or reason God does certain things.

Rom 11:33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

Yes it is obvious you don't try to understand and hence the reason for your erroneous views.Remember the word also says:

Deuteronomy 29:
29The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

And also:

Psalm 25:
14The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.

God would have us know what His people are obliged to do to please Him and the questions I asked are all concerned with this.Your failure to answer them was predictable.
