My pastor said this a couple of weeks ago and I just thought I'd share it because I think it's true. I'm also curious to what your opinions are, since I know there are a lot of atheists here. Anyway here it is:

Our time on earth is either one of two things, depending on whether you're saved or not. If you're saved, then your time on earth is the only hell you'll ever have to experience. If you're not saved, then your time on earth is the only heaven you will ever get to experience.

Our purpose here has a few purposes, one to see if we are willing (and will) follow God, to gain our bodies, and to bring God's children into the world so that they may also have the same as well.

I think it's true. Well the way I see it, if I'm only living for myself and the few people around me, whoop-de-doo. But if I'm living for something greater than myself, greater than the people around me, great enough to heal the sick and cause the blind to see, then wow...that's really something. That's where I want to be.

Nope, if your saved, you will never be able to understand what this life has to offer, because you will always be looking forward to a life that doesn't exist. Which is why this life must seem like hell. If your not, you have a chance to enjoy this life as much as you can, which is why it seems like heaven.:)

I believe that our time here on earth is what we make it. Yes, there is a lot of suffering, but if we try, we can find good things and enjoy life.

I also think it's a very arrogant, but typical Xian view to think that just because someone is a christian they will go to heaven in the end.

Isn't it just as arrogant for you to assume that just because it's the Christian view, that it's arrogant?

If you are a Christian, you get to go to heaven.

That's not a " Iwas baptized into the church as a baby and I'm a christian" Christian.

That's not a "My mama and daddy took me to church christian " Christian.

That's not a "I treat everybody the way I want to be treated and follow the golden rule and do good deeds christian" Christian.

It's a "washed in the blood of Jesus Christ and born again Christian" Christian.

Who or what is saving you? I believe there is no heaven or hell, so what you do in life does not matter in death. If you live life free of religion, with no limits on your experiences, nor expectations for something better than life; that is salvation. I love being free :D

Is it not arrogant to assume that you think it is arrogant to assume the Christian viewpoint is arrogant. The Christian viewpoint can be arrogant like anything else. ;)

But you are presupposing that there is no heaven or hell. If your presupposition is incorrect, then life does matter a great amount in death. Granted, a Christian worldview presupposes things also, but what makes you so confident that your presupposition is correct and a christian presupposition is incorrect?

I'm not so sure it's arrogance. The Bible teaches that some were meant for glory and some were meant for destruction. To adhere to that point of scripture is being faithful to one's belief in the authority of scripture.

You said you didn't believe in heaven or hell. But if the Christian view is correct, then I think it would be fair to say that those who do not believe would be in hell. Why does it upset you that a Christian believes you might go to a place that you don't even believe exists?

Because it's illogical and there are too many things that can't be explained.

So, you're attracted to the power? For me, I couldn't imagine not living my life for myself and those close to me. Anything else is slavery.

Ugh, how negative!

But, anyway, this assumes the existence of heaven and hell. Whether you are saved or not, your time on earth is all the "hell" and "heaven" you will get to experience, so you should learn how to make it as heavenly as you can.

I find it difficult to imagine a worse hell beside believing in such a horrid doctrine, even if I believed myself saved.

You must think very little of yourself and the people around you if you feel that way.

But if I'm living for something greater than myself, greater than the people around me, great enough to heal the sick and cause the blind to see, then wow...that's really something. That's where I want to be.

I live for something greater than myself. I strive to improve myself every day, making myself today greater than myself of yesterday. That's where I want to be.
