On my mom's side, it's French/Belgian and Russian all mixed in. On my dad's side I'm 1/4 English, 1/8 Czech & 1/8 Hungarian. Supposedly I'm the direct descendant of Attila The Hun as my Czech-Hungarian grandmother shared the same last name as him, Magiar.

I always wonder how recently your ancestors have to of been from a certain area for it to count, for example as my parents were born in England that's what I consider myself, English. The fact that my paternal grandparents came over from Schwedt and the maternal from Mayo doesn't really come into it.

edit:

Which seemingly means i'm of German-Irish descent XD

My daughter has investigated our family tree. On my side there is English all the way to the 1500s as far as can be traced, which means much further in all likelihood, mostly farmers, together with a bit of Irish from my great great grandmother. On her dad's side, English all the way to the 1600s so far, with no sign of anything else. Her grandmother thought there would be Hugenots, but not so far. There are a few famous links, but nothing particularly direct. We are about as English as it is possible to be, but all that means is mostly British, some Anglo Saxon, some Viking, a bit of Celt. Pretty much like the rest of Europe.

If I had been born in Outer Mongolia and brought up there, all of this would be exactly the same, but no doubt I would consider myself Mongolian. That would be a shame, I think.

Born in England certainly gives English heritage, and there is nothing wrong with that, but I think it is important to not lose your family's identity along the way.

Shalom, folks!

I'm a Heinz-57 kind of guy, too. Mostly German and Dutch on my father's side, English, Irish, German, French, native North American (Dakota tribe), and Jewish on my mother's side. My mom's mother claimed Jewish ancestry from her mother. If that's true, then I could claim to be Jewish as well (although I can't prove it ... yet).

Fun to think about!

There's even a Frenchman/Indian princess story my uncle dug up!

In the Messiah's love,
Roy
