  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What if you believe but don't repent of your sins?

What if someone doesn't repent of their sins but they still believe in Jesus? Do you think people like that going to hell?
If you believe God saved you, you cannot go to hell. Those who think you can, doubt that God saves people. And we are saved through faith.

You can't have genuine faith without repentance. The two go hand in hand. And you cannot have one without the other.

Watch this video. Do you think the guy didn't "genuinely" trust Jesus as his saviour?

1- Do you think people like that going to hell?

It's my job to speak where scripture speaks. Meaning, I can point out everything that the bible states for one's salvation, however its not my job to make the judgement "you will go to hell" or "you wont go to hell". That's Christs job and only He can do this, not us.

2-What if someone doesn't repent of their sins but they still believe in Jesus?

Being as that it is my job to point out scripture's while I still draw breath and/or Christ has not come back yet, here is what the bible says on your question.

Luke 13:3 and 5; Acts 17:30-31. These are brief, yes, but they get the point across.

Edit: Forgot to mention the scene with King Agrippa in Acts 26. The king believed in Jesus, yet was not persuaded to follow through. Paul said "I know you believe", yet the king said "you almost persuade me". ie believing is not enough.

Faith alone theology that is completely bogus.

Thief on the cross comes to mind.

Jesus looks at the heart and only He knows the heart.

Who are we to say who is saved or not saved?

Repentance is part of believing. Repentance means to change direction or change your mind. When a person is saved, they change their mind about their sin, agreeing with God that it is wrong and deserving of death. They place their trust in Jesus for their forgiveness and salvation based on what He did on the cross for them so they would not perish. So, repentance and belief go together.

One cannot trust Jesus for their salvation if there is nothing for them to be saved from (in their mind).

No repentance has nothing to do with a person receiving God free gift of Eternal Life.

A person is called to believe Jesus is the promised Messiah from The Tanakh's prophecies and trust in the Messiah for the free gift of Gods Eternal Life.

But a person may repent of a sin, but it is believing in the Messiah that gives life. To believe does not require repentance, I believe the Bible is Gods word, I did not have to repent to believe this. I was convinced by the evidence the Bible presented and believed it.

If a person is going to add repentance why stop there, keep adding other requirements. Baptism, confession, obedience, keeping the law, etc...

If you don't repent, you don't believe.

Sure but usually 99% of people already know they are sinners. Everyone knows they have done something wrong, whether it be stealing, lying, etc.

You are effectively saying that John 3:16 is "completely bogus."

And here it comes, the same small minded view that allows some to think it's faith only and that they can take the easy way out.

First, then you are effectively saying Luke 3:13 is bogus.

Secondly, do you not know obeying Christ is part of having faith in him? Do you really believe that because you "say" you have faith, that you do not have to do as Jesus says? Please answer those questions.

So, again, here is what Christ said:

Luke 13:3 ESV
No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish

If by "obeying Christ" you mean obeying the gospel, then yes, I believe obeying Christ is necessary.

2 Thessalonians 1:8 "In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:"

I mean "obeying Christ" as in obeying his verse there, the one I cited on repentance. But just as the questions I asked you to answer, and you chose not to, it appears you are going to pretend none if that was in my post.

Here, I'll make it real easy for you, do you think you need to obey Christ when he tells you:

Luke 13:3 ESV
No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

Yes, no?

In order to have a debate, you must respond to the other side, otherwise all I can assume is you cannot hold up to a debate.

Here's why--

Baptism, confession, etc. are important. They do not, however, define Faith.

Saving Faith requires a genuine trust in Christ as one's lord and savior. And it also requires the person to try to follow the Lord. So if you have a belief in Jesus as someone important or admirable or good, but it doesn't move you to actually become a disciple, you don't have Faith.

Does that mean we need to repent, or not?

It is the Holy Spirit that leads us to repentance.

Repentance as well as forgiveness is the gift of God through Christ.

It is through the influence of the Holy Spirit that we are convinced of sin, and feel our need of pardon. None but the contrite are forgiven; but it is the grace of the Lord that makes the heart penitent. He is acquainted with all our weaknesses and infirmities, and He will help us.

We need to open our hearts to the influence of the Spirit, and to experience His transforming power.

So ... yes ... but we can't do it without Him first convicting us of sin and then helping us to overcome it.

I hate to ask again, but I am still unclear on if you think we need to repent or not in order to get to heaven?
