My life was radically transformed at the young age of 20 when I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ.

I grew up in a very loving home, but I did not know Jesus. Throughout my teenage years, I mistakenly believed that as long as my good behavior outweighed my bad behavior, I would make it to heaven in the end. At the age of nineteen, I met a young man named Joe who told me he was a CPA, and we were inseparable from that moment on. After dating exclusively for seven months and surviving a tumultuous break-up followed by an unanticipated reconciliation, I was shocked to learn Joe’s true identity as he opened up to me one night over dinner.

As I sat across the table from him, I listened intently as Joe disclosed his “real life” story to me. He shared how he had been raised in a Christian home and that his parents were in full-time ministry together. He went on to explain that he had attended Bible college and was called by God into ministry; however, because he was afraid, he had instead been running away from God and working on a ranch to support himself. As he began to weep uncontrollably, all I could do was sit in disbelief and stare at the stranger I thought I knew.

Shortly thereafter, Joe began to share the gospel with me and gave me a Bible to read. He suggested that I start reading in the gospel of John; and when I did, it was as if the words were jumping off of the pages and plunging deep into my soul. God was using His written Word to deal with my sinful heart and reveal the truth of the gospel to me in a way that I had never experienced before. Each time I would read my Bible, God would use His Word to draw me closer to Jesus. Through it, He opened my eyes so that I could see my sinful condition, revealed to me how much He loved me, showed me the way to be saved, counteracted my false beliefs with the truth, and convinced me that forgiveness and salvation were only attainable by His grace through personal faith in what Jesus did for me on the cross. All of these were realities that I had never understood before.

During the next few months, I experienced an intense spiritual battle over my soul until Joe finally pleaded with his dad to come and lead me to Jesus. He came the following day and spent three hours with me, ministering to me from the Word of God. When he was finished, he asked me if I was ready to give my life to Jesus, and I said that I was.

As soon as I finished praying to receive Jesus into my heart, he told me something that would forever impact the rest of my new life in Christ. He told me to “be” in the Word of God, and “stay” in the Word of God. On that day, December 8, 1987, I took his words to heart and never looked back.

Since then, Jesus has given me a deep-rooted hunger and passion for His Word. He has planted a fervent desire inside of me to not only teach His Word to others, but also to defend the faith against falsehood and error. :)
