The problem people have with text is due to their lack of understanding and reliance upon the gospel. Stop trying to justify yourself, and you won't have an issue with this text. Christ demands perfection. That is true, and it always has been true. The only way we make it, is in Him. Look at yourself in the mirror after reading, "be perfect", and you will do one of three things: beg for mercy; fool yourself into believing you are prefect, or lower the bar of God's standards.
Begging for mercy, often turns into acknowledging him and lowering yourself before him and humbly asking his forgiveness when your more mature...

No one will see the Kingdom of God without His mercy. Like Peter, many are too proud to let Jesus wash their feet; however, if they don't, He will have nothing to do with them.

We can't walk into glory on our own two feet. We must be carried in by our Savior.

Yes, I kinda think it begins most often by needing him and seeking a relationship with him, and that relationship grows and deepens by continuing to need him and having him or his/their spirit in your life... And the rewards or fruit of this is extraordinary...

If you are relying upon your own righteousness to be acceptable to God, then Christ is of no use to you. There IS a scripture for that: I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. Gal 2:21

Oh, and yes, there is is much scriptural backing for my original post: For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. Romans 3:20

The Mosaic Law could be obeyed perfectly. It wasn't too hard to do--even God said so.

But the Mosaic Law was not God's perfect law, and God never said that obedience to the Mosaic Law would obligate Him to give them eternal life.

You know that, though.

No, the men who wrote the scripture wrote teleios, and the meaning of that had been known since Plato.

It's been people since then that have enlarged the meaning to some concept aside from that which the men who wrote the bible intended by using teleios.

You just can't throw verse 21 around without a clear and concise understanding of the preceding verse (20).

And which book? Galatians 2:20 + 21

Those two verses, along with the other list I included earlier, all point a believer to perfection, in Christ, by Christ, for Christ, and because of Christ... no other way, and no other reason but for the glory of God.

I'm a Christian. No "false religion" here. As such, my hope is found in Him and Him alone. He lived a perfect life on my behalf, and He died a sinner's death on my behalf. By faith, both of those realities are mine, and anyone else who desires them may freely partake; however, not many do because they have no need.

Could you clarify...?

That your salvation be truly of God, and not founded on man-made theories or concepts based on false religion. Beware when people write things that are not from scripture, the truth, or the word.
Ex. "I think..." "IMHO..." etc... People make up a lot of stuff that becomes vain philosophy and bad religion, with no biblical foundation that will lead you astray from God.

Sanctify :

• (often be sanctified) make legitimate or binding by religious sanction
• free from sin; purify.
• (often be sanctified) being right or good; legitimize

JESUS said as He prayed to He Father for us,
John 17 :
[17] Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
[19] And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

Ephesians 5:
[26] That he might sanctify and cleanse it (the church) with the washing of water by the word,

1 Thessalonians 5:
[23] And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
