Considering how much the government already spies on us (go look up PRISM), I'm not exactly sure. Only thing I can think of that could lessen it, but not eradicate it, is to weaken all forms of identitarian politics. That doesn't mean not being proud of who you are, but both sides of the political spectrum has been using it to cut up enough chunks of the population to win elections, despite how damaging it is to us as a society.

Great. How do we do that?

Well, to be fair, the NRA has been pushing mental health care improvement. But I doubt they'd support a surcharge on all gun and ammunition purchases to support that. The IMPORTANT thing is we can blame the mentally ill and be done with it all!

If anything we should have a REGISTRY of the mentally ill in the USA. It's much better than some sort of bizarre registry of gun owners in the USA. That's just creepy.
Registry of mentally ill people, huh? Good way to discourage people from getting treatment.

Have you been having any terrorist attacks there? Have you gun laws prevented them?

In the USA we seldom have terrorist attacks. Mostly it is good and proper Americans using perfectly legally obtained guns to mow down Americans. That isn't terrorism. That's just another day here in paradise. Now in the case of Las Vegas we may have a guy who illegally got his hands on a modification of a perfectly legal gun, but the gun isn't to blame. The gun was an innocent victim of the nefarious actions of an American expressing his right to load an armory into his hotel room as one does.

Just so long as we don't threaten guns. We have to remember which is more important.

yeah, bomb attacks really could be prevented by guns.
... hmmmm.... reminded of something said a few years ago ----

people stocking up guns and ammo think they might be 'safe' ?

The people (u.s. government, other governments, etc) with missiles don't care.

Or Orlando? Or San Bernardino? Or Columbine? Or Newtown?

Political action? Legal action? Social action? Personal action?

Or should we even bother? Do we simply resign ourselves to going through these motions again in another 6 months or so? Or are we counting on these kinds of incidents to just go away?

Thoughts?

So, what if we did all those things and it happened again in another 6 months...what then?

Consider the possibilities if they took all the guns? Would something worse than what we have now happen? Doesn't take much of an imagination to know the alternative could be a lot worse.

Keep tweaking it best we can, know stuff happens, and we shouldn't risk much worse stuff in order to try to stop bad stuff...out of the frying pan, into the fire.

I guess it's a balancing act that should be taken very seriously.

Maybe that's the way it is in the UK. I guess some people value what they have as a right rather than a luxury.

It's a right here too, but it's still a luxury.

I can live without shooting things quite happily, and millions do.

I'm a bit lost in that. What are we balancing? What are we tweaking? What had we done since Littleton to prevent similar events? What had we done since Orlando or Kingport?

Agreed, though we do need to do something about it.

Absolutely nothing, the vast majority want Tougher Background checks.

you all do realize that a day before this Congress were deciding if they wanted to Legalize Silencers.

Massacre blunts momentum of gun silencer bill

and as much as many of you may hate Hillary she is right on this matter

Hillary Clinton on Twitter
"The crowd fled at the sound of gunshots. Imagine the deaths if the shooter had a silencer, which the NRA wants to make easier to get."

"Our grief isn't enough. We can and must put politics aside, stand up to the NRA, and work together to try to stop this from happening again."

Neither did those people in Australia. Would you have "absolutely no problem" with your authorities claiming that the next mass shooting warrants them coming to your home and confiscating all your guns based on what someone else did?

That didn't happen in Australia.

Why not wait for all of the facts until we start trying to decide how to prevent another one?

Or... you know, at least until we know how and why.:doh1:
That's certainly a sensible approach with respect to LV. But theOP is much broader than that and I don't think we are going to get anymore info from Newtown etc.

The USA at this point in time does not have the desire locally or nationally, to exercise gun control in any manner. Given that, then the focus is on security measures. But appreciate that carrying weapons openly is legal in some states which limits any security strategy. But even with Las Vegas, screening for weapons into the event would not have prevented it because the shooter choose a vantage point in an adjacent building.

So all you can do is sharpen the response process, which the USA is already very accomplished at when it comes to active shooters

Perhaps it should be legal to build bombs and keep them. They would be useful in defence and some would use them for Sport or science purposes......... But we don't, because we fear we'd start seeing 100 people a week killed by those bombs..... So it's illegal..... Meanwhile in excess of 100 people a week are killed from guns in the USA. Now in UK Australia New Zealand etc it's viewed that anything killing those numbers is worth severely restricting for the safety and security of our societies...... And it works for them.
