I've long though that Heaven and Hell are names for the way that each of us experiences the love of God. Many hate and fear that love, out of shame, guilt, selfishness, or many other things. For them, God's light is experienced as heat, fire, fear and pain. For the believer in God's love, the one who is "in Christ" (much as you encase your skin in sunblock!), God's light is a gentle, healing, comforting Presence. Of course, this orientation is not a matter of a physical place; I don't buy into the idea that there is a "place" called Heaven, that you might enter later, and another "place" called Hell, that you might enter later, and a third, neutral place, called "the world," where you live now. There's no "neutral." Every moment, we are opening to the love of God in hope and trust (Heaven), or closing ourselves off from it in shame and pain ("Hell"). I believe that, one day, these attitudes will be so firmly fixed that there is no longer any possibility of change, and that will be your Heaven or Hell - even though both human types will still be "in God."
