Actually, it has been shown by ancient documents on clay tablets (Cuneiform, Ugaritic, etc.) that Ancient Near East people (such as Babylonians, Persians, Ugarits) believed the Earth was flat (a flat disc), and most believed it was covered with a solid dome. If I'm not mistaken, I think they believed there was some kind of land around the rim to prevent the sea from draining. IMO there was always some people throughout the ages who believed the Earth was flat. Such a shape appears to be supported by the Bible, if one decides to read that into it. I have heard people argue contrary to discoveries of science, because they think the Bible contradicts it. For example, one person tried to argue that the moon is a source of light, because that's how they read the statement in Gen. 1. You cannot reason with people who have their minds made up.
