Actually, it has been shown by ancient documents on clay tablets (Cuneiform, Ugaritic, etc.) that Ancient Near East people (such as Babylonians, Persians, Ugarits) believed the Earth was flat (a flat disc), and most believed it was covered with a solid dome. If I'm not mistaken, I think they believed there was some kind of land around the rim to prevent the sea from draining. IMO there was always some people throughout the ages who believed the Earth was flat. Such a shape appears to be supported by the Bible, if one decides to read that into it. I have heard people argue contrary to discoveries of science, because they think the Bible contradicts it. For example, one person tried to argue that the moon is a source of light, because that's how they read the statement in Gen. 1. You cannot reason with people who have their minds made up.

Point well taken. Apparently, that evidence doesn't contradict the prevailing notion that many accepted a spherical earth within the last 2300 years or the idea that a flat earth was the prevailing conception in the middle ages is just false (per AI).

But, yes, it's exasperating to me how people reject long established facts because "the Bible says so." It's not necessary, and it makes the lot of us look ignorant. I usually paste an Augustine quote at this point, but it is long and also not necessary. As you say, you cannot reason with people who have their minds made up.

Right. Augustine gave leeway to current understandings. He thought to go against what everyone knew was reasonable and informed made the whole community look ill-informed, and that worked against the goal of the gospel. Of course, he also didn't believe in folks who were antipodes and once saw a huge femur that he thought validated biblical giants.

We were always taught the heliocentric model I can’t remember ever being taught anything else. About the only time it first dawned that there was such a belief as flat earth was while watching a re run of aa old uk comedy the Dave Ellen show. They were in pursuit of the end of the world. Then suddenly they came to their destination and their ship fell off the edge of the world . Converted me straight away : )

Well, since you pipe into my conversation with the other poster, I'll answer your question. I was taught a global Earth (spherical). This was during the years 1960-1972. I didn't hear that any modern people believed in a flat world until I heard of "The Flat Earth Society" around 1980. I thought it ridiculous that anyone would believe in a flat earth until I learned about conspiracy theories and urban legends. Then I understood.

But regarding my previous response, I thought it was relevant because I was pointing out that the flat earth theory has been around since pre-history.
