If the atmosphere was trying to escape, and was only prevented from doing so by a solid dome, we would expect there to be more atmosphere the nearer we got to the dome. But that is not what happens. The higher one goes from the earth, whether in a plane or by climbing a mountain, the less atmosphere there is.

But with regard to the earth, air has weight, which attracts it to the earth, and prevents it being "sucked away" into a vacuum. I must repeat that I am not a scientist, so I am sure that somebody with more scientific knowledge could put it much better.

Well, I have already answered that. It would depend on the situation. Air has weight - I understand tat a cubic metre of air at sea level weighs 1.3 kilograms, and the total weight of the earth's atmosphere is 5 quadrillion tonnes. The air's weight keeps the air on the earth. Without that weight, it would "escape" into any vacuum. I still don't understand why you posted a link to details of an experiment using a hydraulic press.
