I am gettting very frustrated with people who put their brain in their back pocket and just parrot things they have been told with out thinking...

Adam and Eve... real people?
Jonah really swallowed by a fish?
Noah and the world wide flood?
Thousands slain with the jawbone of an ass?
Sun stopped in the sky for several hours?
Wrestling with angels?
Pillars of salt?
Angel of death?
Hell?

It is no wonder people are either refusing to believe in God or turning their brains off... if this is what we need to accept as literal reality in order to be Christians... count me out.

I am so tired of hearing "I don't know how it is possible but it's in The Bible so I believe it."

So to the OP... was he created a baby, young man (16) adult (30) ... did he have a beard? navel? immune system? muscles? could he speak? what was the focal distance for his brand new eyes? could he walk immediately like a calf or colt or did he need to learn how to walk? dark or light skin? long hair or short?

If you believe he was a real person, aren't these kinda problematic?

Hi KCDAD.

Me personally, I don't believe that "Adam" was a real person. I would look at the entire creation account (as well as most of the Old Testament) in a more esoteric, apocryphal manner to be understood metaphorically.

Of course, I don't think that any belief on this subject is either right or wrong. It's all just how we understand it and what seems best for us on our spiritual path.

Blessings,

Father Jay

I don't believe in Adam and Eve as real people... it's a story to define sin

I also don't believe in Noah's Ark... that's just a silly story... and it no more believable than the little old woman who lived in a shoe.

Adam and Eve... real people?
nope, at least not referring to just two literal people one made from the rib of another.

Jonah really swallowed by a fish?
nope, sounds like a fable to me

Noah and the world wide flood?
nope, pure myth perhaps based loosely on some real event but greatly exagerated.

Thousands slain with the jawbone of an ass?
Yes, in a sense, many a war has been started when a ruler worked his jaw ;)

Sun stopped in the sky for several hours?
certianly not, I would have to think that if the Earth stopped rotating there would be some rather serious side effects ;) of course the authors did not know the Earth was rotating and thought the stars, moon, sun revolved around the planet.

Wrestling with angels?
metaphorically in ones mind wrestling with the desires to do right and or wrong

Pillars of salt?
:D sure, but from people, seems like quite a strech.

Angel of death?
nope, not in the sense that most would think

Hell?
nope, again not in the sense that most would think.

I find it amazing what some people will say they believe when they have a hell threat hanging over them ;)

Blessings to you and those you love:

While I agree that a belief can hardly be labelled "right or wrong", after all it is a belief... if you allow the interpretation that Adam was a real individual created at a moment in time... these questions are very problematic. If he was created as an adult (or at least past puberty) what are we to do with the physiological problems of aging, muscle development, speech, neurological development, hormones, environmental adaptations like callouses and pigmentation and all the other surrendered realities of being a human being?

It isn't enough to say whatever you believe is ok... we must seek God in spirit and in truth.

Since 'Adam' means 'humankind', "Adam" looks a lot like the human race as a whole...

We are a people of "original blessing" who choose sin and are self-destroyed as a result.

That's a great phrase. What's it mean?

My friend, what is truth? Is truth something that you can "prove" to all of humanity, or just something you prove for yourself? And at what point does faith enter the equation?

And what if god, however you perceive god to be, does not care that all believe differently? Or in fact what if god intends for all to believe differently?

Blessings,

Father Jay

I don't disagree with you. Truth is something that can not be found by us, but still must be diligently sought.

Noah and the world wide flood?

Adam and Eve... real people?
Yep. I do believe that, while its not IN the bible, God also made other people after adam and eve.
Jonah really swallowed by a fish?
Sure. Different time, different animals. Who knows what size fish they might have had back then. ~shrug~
Noah and the world wide flood?
Yep. There is proof to support the theory of a world-wide flood.
Thousands slain with the jawbone of an ass?
~nods~ All things are possible with God.
Sun stopped in the sky for several hours?
Since all things are under God's control, and his very will sustains existance, I see no problem.
Wrestling with angels?
Who hasn't? I have, many a time. (Though, I speak of mentally, not physically. That would be fun though! ^_^)
Pillars of salt?
~nods~
Angel of death?
Well, this I'm not sure about. Sure, there might be angels who watch over us as we are about to die, but Christ is the one with the power over life and death, no one else.

So.. I have to go with no.

100%. If we are to believe that living a christ-like life is going to grant us rewards in HEAVEN, then we must also believe that NOT living a Christ-like life sows us punishment in HELL. ~shrug~ I don't see how a Christian could not believe in hell.

Realistically, yes, but theological no, because Adam and eve we get some good original sin theology
