fieldmouse3 ~ I've been talking with breeders, and researching, and I agree with you that getting a good quality purebred dog for $200 isn't the thing to do. The breeders I have stayed in contact with have told me that the reason the ask so much for their animals is because they make sure to breed them properly, trying to get rid of medical needs, and bad genetics. So when you pay that much for a purebred dog, you're getting your money's worth because they will be a healthy dog. Typically, good breeders also give a health warranty which is at the least for one year. Also, if you were to get a purebred dog that costs less, and then they end up having medical problems, you'll be paying a lot more than that initial cost of $1,000 or more for a good breeder on medical bills! So, I defiintely agree with you on that one! Thanks for the comments! This thread doesn't have to be over if people still want to post! :) I'll continue to post in here if there are other comments! :D GOD Bless! :prayer:

Hi

Well as a proud owner of a 1 1/2 yr old JRT I will give you a little advice.

I got my JRT (male) fixed when he was old enough to do so. I don't know about other peoples experience but mine is that it calmed him down exactly 0%.

My jack is constantly full of energy, you need to excercize them alot, and playing fetch for 20 min is just a warm up to him.

They are very smart and will train easily, but also very stubborn when they want to be, which seems to be alot in my case. :)

Cuddle wise he sleeps between me and my wife and loves to snuggle up, but thats only when he is tired.

All in all he is a loveable dog, even though he is high maintenance when it comes to wanting constant attention. So if you don't have the time, energy, or patience for him I would say take him back while still young, that way they can find a new home. But if you do decide to keep him, I don't think you will find a better companion in life that will give you plenty of entertainment with his antics.

I live in an aprtment now and feel bad for my pal, but I am getting ready to move into a house, and was also thinking of getting another dog for him to play with. If you have the room and really want to keep think about that because mine love to play with other dogs and they will give each other quite a workout. Although that also means twice the trouble as well ;)

Primordial Soup ~ Hey there! Thank you very much for the advice! Sullivan is still pretty active... he does relax sometimes too though. He's about half and half! So that's good! I'm trying to teach him that it's good to be hyper OUTSIDE, and not so much inside. I mean, I don't mind him being kind of active inside, just not BOUNCING off the walls, which sometimes he is. I LOVE his companionship! He's such an awesome dog, and his personality matches mine PERFECTLY! I'm so glad I didn't get rid of him! He's such a sweetheart! :D

You know what though? His legs look like a Basset Hound's legs. As I said in a previous post, I was told his mother was a Beagle, and I believe he is mixed with a Jack Russell, because of his face. He looks like a Russell completely in the face! And his body is more Beagle like, and now his legs, they are looking like a Basset Hounds! So I have NO clue what he is mixed with!!! Like right now, he is sleeping at my feet! *Awww, how sweet!!!* Well, let me know what you think!! I could NEVER get rid of him, he's just the sweetest! And depending on what he's mixed with will depend on what he's like the older he gets!!! I'll definitely have to ask my Vet!!! Haha! :D Anywho~ thank you again!! GOD Bless!

If you want a cuddly totally laid back doggy, try a Basset Hound. I have a female basset, that is 11 months, and she is the sweetest dog!!! Very gentle and kind.. She only takes a few walks a day, and snoozes most of the time, and is a TOTAL cuddler!! She's small for a basset too, only weighing a little over 30 lbs. and the vet said that is as big as she's gonna get. What's great about the breed, is that you don't have to manage their fur... just a few brushings and that's all. :)

Harley's pics posted below. Isn't she cute!

Those Basset pics are so ADORABLE!!! She's such a cutie! I've heard that Basset's have leg problems because of their weight on the short legs. (I watch a lot of Animal Planet) :D Anywho ~ I saw a Basset on there that had to have leg surgery because it's joints were so mis-formed by the weight of him, that his knees were very bent. Anywho ~ Thank you for the info!!! Those pics were just SO cute!!!! Thank you for sharing them! GOD Bless!!!

phnx ~ Hey there! Yea, my friend has a Golden Retriever ~ two actually! They are very loving dogs... altho, the youngest one, is a pretty hyper dog... I have another friend who has a Golden Retriever, and she says he is just awesome! So is the Golden just like what I described? :) And is it just like what you want?

DJBelieves ~ You are lucky to have gotten the Basset that you did! You probably won't have any problems with her! You know, I wonder why breeders of bassets don't try to make them better in that respect? So they won't have to worry about that? I'm sure it's painful to have such bent legs for the dogs! Anywho ~ Thank you for the comments! :D GOD Bless!!! More are VERY VERY welcome!

Hello there Emery7: I also own a JRT/ Beagle Mix and I must say he is a ton of fun, when they are first puppies they are high strung but as long as you get them enough exercise they are fine. Mine "Mr. Rush" as we call him , is a little over a year old and he is the sweetest cuddler in the world, so sweet he just comes up and lays next to me everytime I sit down. It really just takes time, after he got to about a year, which was last November, he started really calming down and behaving better. Remember those dogs are really smart, they are a combination of very intelligent breeds, so you can teach them things really quickly. Get him some good exercise, like the dog park or take him for runs, he'll appreciate that. Also play with him, my dog loves fetch in particular, all he really needs to be entertained is a ball thrown at him.

In reference to dog breeds that get along with Beagle/JRT mixes I would strongly reccommended Australian Shepherds(they love to play as well), Golden Retrievers, Boxers, Border Collies, Other JRTs, or really any dogs that can match their energy level. I WOULD NOT reccommended pugs or excessively lazy dogs, they seem to just get annoyed by my dog.

Hope i've helped.

Much love

Christina

christina ~ Hey there! :) Wow, so you have a Beagle/Russell mix too huh? That's awesome! So you say he calmed down a lot around 1? Well, I have around 7-8 more months to go!! We aren't sure exactly how old Sullivan is, but we guessed he was born in September 2003. :) I was thinking of a Newfoundland... granted, that's a HUGE dog, but they have a good temperament. Also ~ I'm not sure, and I'm going to ask my vet, but Sullivan's legs are looking like a Basset's! So I have NO clue what he truly is! The foster mom of Sullivan said the mother was a Beagle, but maybe the mom was mixed with a Basset, who knows! They dont know who the father was... but Sulli's face looks like a Russell! Anywho ~ I need to go study for classes ~ I'll talk laters! More comments are VERY VERY welcome!!! GOD Bless!!

Ok a golden retriever is a great choice for a first dog. They do require a decent amount of exersise but no more than most other breeds. I suggest training classes at an early age too. They are very very keen to learn and suprised me how well they adapt to training. Theyre not really that scatty, but just adore attention and go off in a mope if they dont get it  . I personally wanted a more active dog like a border collie but didnt have the time for it. I've never regretted having max for one minute though :D

How much time would you be spending with your dog roughly?

Well, daily walks would be a start, and on the weekends, I would LOVE to take my dog to a park. I definitely want a SNUGGLE dog, and I KNOW Golden's snuggle!! All of them I have ever met, just love to snuggle. :D Sullivan, he's getting there... I have to MAKE him snuggle with me, and by the time he settles down, I feel bad for making him sit there! So after I let go of my hold, he runs away. I LOVE Sullivan, and I'm definitely contemplating a dog to go along with him. Sullivan and my friend's Goldens play so well together. The Golden is such an awesome dog... it's like he knows when to be gentle! And they are very loyal, etc.! Well, I have to go to work, I'll talk laters! GOD Bless!
