The Gulag Archipelago. It's probably among the darkest things that I've ever read, and just to make up for it, I'm probably going to read an enormous book of jokes about kittens once I'm done.

I'd like to read that at some point. I read The First Circle and enjoyed it, and used a brief portion of it as part of a devotional study group at church.

Well I use a Kindle a lot. I bounce around a lot. I have loaded it up with some theology books from the sets of " NIC " and " NAC".

And Im reading 'The Dog that came to stay" 1960 copyright. I ordered a copy off the internet, used of course. It's a wonderful book. About a dog that showed up at a Man's cabin. It's so good, I have been making myself only read one page a night so it will last a long time. : )

A former racist skinhead examines aspects of his past: Where did the hate begin? How did a teenaged alcoholic become a central figure in the white power movement of the late 80s and early 90s? What happened to bring about his drastic change of mind and heart? With a collection of reflective essays, disturbing flashbacks, and an interview, My Life After Hate scrubs scabs off the festering wound of racism, then soothes with the essential wisdom of forgiveness and compassion.

I'm reading The Challenge of Jesus by N.T. Wright

My husband and I are currently reading Luke in N.T. Wright's New Testament for everyone. It's a series of Bible commentaries covering the entire New Testament. He does his own translation in them. He gives a little segment of scripture them a couple of pages of commentary. We're both really enjoying it.

I am also reading a book by Deborah Crombie. It's the second book in her Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James series, but I forget the title. :p

This weekend, I finished Edmund S. Morgan's Roger Williams: The Church and the Sate, and posted the following review on Amazon:

Morgan provides a perceptive study of William's thinking on the church and state. In contrast to most Protestants (then and now), Williams accepted apostolic succession, but thought succession had been irremeably lost when the church officially allied with the Roman Empire. For him, no true church or minister could exist apart from this severed succession. Despite this, Williams thought that the state should not interfere, and should even protect the right of citizens to worship as their conscience saw fit. In no way did he view all denominations as equally correct, but thought people had the right to be wrong, and true faith could not be coerced by the state.

Yet for all his courage to challenge accepted ideas of his time, he remained a Christian. Although he separated himself to a radical degree from his fellow Christians as a consequence of his ideas about the church, he viewed those New England churches with rigorous membership requirements as a close approximation of the true church that he believed to be lost until the return of Christ. Williams never encouraged anyone in these New England churches to abandon their church. Agree or disagree with Williams, his courage and independent spirit inspire admiration.
