That sounds an incredible ride, wonderful! I love canal boats, Peter and I used to spend holidays on a canal boat. We got stuck under the bridge at Stratford on Avon once because the water was too high. We asked some tourists to come on the boat to bring it lower down in the water. They turned out to be Dutch and couldn't speak very good English. We finally managed to make them understand and about a dozen or more came on board chuckling away. The boat gradually sank enough to get under the bridge to loud cheers. Thanks to the Dutch tourists! And we went on our way after letting them disembark with our grateful thanks. Wonderful fun memories.Went out on the bike today. Started from my home, used the canal towpaths, went through the local park, the nature reserve and woods, and stopped at a canal junction where there were barges moored and a few people out walking their dogs. Came back along the main canal to my home.
Total distance of 6 miles and finished the circuit within an hour. I was very disappointed with the time as it showed that I was terribly unfit, but very pleased with the weather which was warm and sunny. Had a welcome glass of chilled juice waiting for me when I got home - I needed it!
Canal boats are fantastic aren't they! I don't get much opportunity to ride on them, but see them all the time, and the people riding them always say hello and are very friendly. It requires a lot of patience I think, especially when navigating through locks which take a lot of effort (and time!) but it's such a peaceful, unhurried way of life. That sounds an incredible ride, wonderful!
