The reason for this question, is that the news has been suggesting a possible presidential run for Ron DeSantis, who I personally view as an authoritarian kind of person, in comparison with Trump. But then I remembered a lot of people claiming that Trump was a fascist - but I never viewed him that way.

Personally, my view of Trump is a 1980's kind of guy, who isn't the type who is into banning books, or being racist, or going against progressive, democratic values at all.

...So I was wondering where people get off calling him "fascist", especially when considering that Ron DeSantis does indeed seem more that way than Trump ever did.

In fact, I view DeSantis as so authoritarian, I might even consider voting Democrat if he becomes the primary candidate for the GOP - something I've never considered before in my life.
'Fascist' is what you call your enemies. Or what your enemies call you. But to be a real Fascist you have to be Socialist.

No, the first people to be called "fascists" were by self-identification. I suggest you look into Benito and how he called his movement. (Fascist is the English version of the word, in case someone wants to get cute about the Italiano word.)

I literally compared Trumps actions to Benito when I saw the thread.
He used His victory in the 1924 election to attack future elections sort of like Trump attacked Brad Raffensperger
For too many leaders in European history, their impulsive instincts has been based on fascism. You would think such historic nations would have rejected such leaders, surely there is influence coming from nations in their orbits that attempt to place such leaders in power.

What makes America unique is a checks and balances system. This prevents fascist leaders in theory, though one might argue that power even in the U.S Executive Branch has become more centralized. This could.open the door to more fascist-leaning leaders at some juncture.

Obviously there was some question regarding it but how is that racist?
How is it obvious? Why was there any question, particularly after Obama gave his short form and the Hawaiian Dept. of Health vouched for him and after he was vetted by state election boards for eligibility?

Why did Donald continue to lie about it for five years?

And Biden is better? He has a big racist past as do the Democrats and you know it...

I found this very interesting: Take It From the Black Robin Hood: Biden Is More Racist Than Trump
Oh What Aboutism!

Ah, no. It is erroneous because Obama was born in the US and not in Africa, as was alleged. Just as it was erroneous to claim John McCain wasn't a US citizen because he was born in the Panama Canal Zone. Neither claim was racist. Wrong, yes; racist, no.
It was both erroneous and racist in Obama's case. Once an error has been pointed out then continuing it is no longer an error but deliberate tactic and a lie.

Note that the question about McCain was not an issue, while birtherism most definitely was.

Neither is pointing fingers and throwing stones.
I started my post out → “I have always figured” (#10) That could make me right or wrong ….
I wasn’t pointing fingers ….But if it hits a nerve….that’s ok … It applies to me just as much as to anyone else.

I went to this other search and wow it had allot of pictures like Google but Trump was no where in it but did have others it called believed to be fascist that hmm allot of news networks never call fascist. I tend to use Bing/Google as a last resort. They really lean left. Hard pressed to find balanced one

I wouldn't really consider either of them fascist. Trump never argued for any increased military intervention....just the opposite. DeSantis doesn't strike me as unwilling to engage with political opponents over disagreements of opinion.

I do not claim to be an expert on political ideology, but military intervention seemed to be a thing with the Nazis in particular, while a lot of fascists before then were actually non-interventionist
