It's my opinion & it's not baseless. Matthew says they have no root. Mark says they have no depth of earth. If they don't run deep, the implication is they run shallow - ie a superficial experience. You can see the same in cultural Christians which consider themselves Christians because they grew up in a Christian family, in a Christian country, not because they have any real experience with the Lord himself.
You can believe the message, even desire it, without receiving Christ, who made this distinction himself :
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. John 5:39-40
To be clear, and once again, none of that matters. The point we are trying to make here is can one lose salvation. They were a believer, and they fell away, for whatever reason. Meaning simply, they lost their salvation. If you choose not to see that, that is up to you.
