I have read that the inequality in the USA is terrible and on the level of third world countries. Few people have more than the majority of population together.

And people are doing "just fine" until they are young, healthy and with a good job, living in a good neighborhood etc.

But I do not know, I have never been there.

Prosperous meaning... cars? Plasma TVs?

Or - educated, healthy, slim, with low crime rates, safe to go out at night, without a fear from the future...?

Interesting - welcome! I think you should come and visit. You will find a population of people that come from a wide variety of backgrounds and ethnicity. My parents immigrated during the time that Edvard Benes was in power. (no we are not Czech, but close).

What you will find is a wide variety of every economic strata. Some came and were low income by US standards (higher than what they came from), some came and went to school and bettered them selves, some came (like my uncle) and through hard work became a multi millionaire.

The beautiful thing about the US is the opportunity that is here.

You just might be surprised at what you find. Please if you get the chance to come, come.

And many Americans don't seek wealth. They just enjoy everything that America offers. Although it's pretty easy to prosper in America.

I thought you do not like immigrants these days :)

I am planning to visit when I will have enough money for some hotel accomodation to stay for a month or so.

I don't think Bernie's supporters actually want a socialist government and economy. But they are in such financial straits, with student debts, lack of affordable health insurance, high costs of college, etc. that they are pinning their hopes on him to bail them out of these troubles. Hopefully though when they are faced with socialism-level taxation they will come to their senses.

Bernie wants social democracy like in northern Europe, not Soviet bread lines.

And it would be a horrible thing if the DNC puts their finger on the scales like they did last time. I voted for Bernie in the primaries. I did vote for Hillary for president, but Bernie was first choice and he was very popular with many people.

I think its quite a common knowledge that USA is full of social inequalities. You do not have to read some special publication to get that impression.
The poor in the USA would be the wealthy in most counties of the world. To think that this is not so merely because there are some people who are even better off is very poor thinking.

Well, Bernie does
so what kind of supporters are those ones?

Answer -- lost ones.

It’s not a good comparison though. Saying ‘well our poor have more net value than millions of poor people in Africa’ doesn’t mean you’re doing things right. America is wonderful in lots of ways, but you guys have never fully embraced the idea that in a rich country there should be a certain standard of life that no-one should be allowed to drop below. That’s why Europeans tend to look at America in bemusement.

If you want to change the subject, there is some place for discussing "doing things right." However, I was addressing the point that our friend had raised about his perception concerning inequalities in wealth.

This is a frequently repeated meme of the right, but it's not true

"Meme" schmeme. It's a fact that the poor in the USA would be considered privileged if living in most countries of the world. Of course, it would be possible for you to hunt up some special person who didn't own a thing and had no social services to depend on for anything whatsoever. Somewhere. Maybe. But that doesn't negate the truth of what I posted.

I’m not changing the subject at all. The point he made was about inequality. In other words equality with other Americans, so your poor having more net worth than poor people elsewhere in the world is kind of meaningless.

The US has a level of poverty that we simply don’t see in Western Europe in any major way. There’s a reason for that.

Sorry, but you said this:

Saying ‘well our poor have more net value than millions of poor people in Africa’ doesn’t mean you’re doing things right.

So you not only changed the subject (to 'doing things right') but misrepresented what I had said myself. I'm willing to hear an argument that actually deals with what I posted, sure.

.

When relatively upscale places like Nordstroms here in the US are essentially becoming thrift stores... you do the math.

America welcomes immigrants, always has, my parents were immigrants.

What America (and many other nations) don’t like is ILLEGAL immigrants.

And how poor the wealthy are…

What difference to my life does the economic and financial position of the wealthy make? If I and the rest of society have enough why should I care if the wealthy have more than enough? How does it harm me that someone else has more than I do?

my family immigrated to the US towards the end of WW2. It was better than dying and America was a land of opportunity.

My grandparents on both sides came with their children. I think it is a microcosm in some ways.

between the two sides, they had five children.

The oldest put himself through college and became a Pharmacist. Worked his whole life in a hospital, raised two children, one also a pharmacist the other a nuclear physicist (no joke)

Another became a pharmacist also, eventually starting his own business and by the time he retired owned 8 pharmacies that were bought out by Rite Aide and he is a multi millionaire.

My dad graduated with two degrees in finance and raised his family. Never made more than 40k a year

my mother was a housewife her whole life. Never worked outside the house

my other uncle drank himself to death

All this from two families of immigrants with zero college education, learning English and working labor jobs their whole lives. My paternal grandfather worked in a bottling plant and the other worked concrete.

Not one was jealous of the other. It didn’t matter than we lived in a 1,300 sq ft home and my cousins lived in one that was ten times the size.

maybe, just maybe if we would stop worrying about what so and so has that we don’t. We would live happier lives.
