  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If I understand it right..
The idea is that if you do not have the self-control to stop yourself from spending the money you are trying to safe.

well of course one should stop themselves from spending money if they do not need something and if they are obligated morally to be saving?

how does that relate to contraception?

It relates to the self control bit.

In the case of buying a house on a mortgage, it may actually be more financially responsible. Say after so many years of paying $700 rent, you finally scrounge up a down payment that allows you to buy a home and only have to pay $500 a month on the mortgage. Then you will have more money to save for emergency funds, and be building equity towards having your very own home which will only cost maybe $100-$200 a month later for various taxes and insurance.

The only responsible use of contraceptives that I can think of is for a legitimate medical reason, such as my sister, who has a blood disorder and cannot risk proceeding naturally with her cycle due to the issue.

why is it suddenly okay in our times for Christians to use one another for sex without a full gift of self?

if a man cannot wait until the right time to be with his wife--whether to achieve or avoid pregnancy--then how can he claim to have self control?

Sex isn't about using one another; it's about getting closer to each other. My boyfriend and I limit sexual activity to once a week, even though we're tempted quite more often than that. And, contraceptives are great even for in marriage; not everyone wants to have a kid just yet and they greatly decrease chances of that happening.

Two common responsible uses of contraception are to avoid pregnancies and to avoid STD's.
But I am not Catholic.
Contraception is most definitely not 100% effective at preventing STDs. It is completely irresponsible to risk getting a disease just for ten (give or take) minutes of pleasure.

Avoiding pregnancy can be done by practicing self-restraint, without any of the potential side effects of medications or the risk of unwanted pregnancy that comes with condoms.

No, contraceptives aren't 100% effective at preventing either pregnancy or STDs, but most people seem to think it's an acceptable risk.

It is an acceptable risk... it's 97% less risk. That means, you have to seriously screw up if it's going to malfunction.

And that number actually includes people not using it correctly. So read up on how to actually use it and its even safer than that.

Pretty much that.

Plus, usage of more than one method reduces the odds further.

Condom+pill+being reasonably selective in partner is a pretty good all-round procedure.

Contraception is much more effective than the rhythm method.

Married people enjoy having sex, even when they do not want to have another baby.

The 'ten minutes of pleasure', that you are greatly undervaluing, is a healthy and important part of many stable relationships. In my opinion, depriving each other of this pleasure is unhealthy.

The right time to have sex with my wife is when we're both in the mood. "Full gift of self" is a meaningless catch phrase.

I think that "Full gift of self" means you didn't do it with anyone else... the more you saved for marriage, the more you give in marriage. It's a wedding night thing.

But with contraception, my wife and I don't have to be sexually frustrated and tense. Sure there's a risk she'll get pregnant, but it's negligible. The Catholic Church has lot the battle against contraception, it's just sad now.
