• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I understand.

I agree that it's flawed. If nothing else, an automatic "everyone not like me is hostile to me" reaction is paranoid and not terribly bright.

That's the sad thing to me. The people I saw saying it are people who's posts lead me to believe they are actually VERY intelligent and, otherwise, fine examples of good men and women.

Yikes! That's a bummer. :( I've more often seen it from people who don't think things through terribly well.

Thing is, I think the label may be warranted, if you're really talking about someone who is indeed openly hostile towards whatever your cause or belief is. Christopher Hitchens, for instance, could probably rightly be called an anti-theist, while Valerie Solanas was indeed rabidly anti-male... yet not every atheist is an anti-theist, and not every feminist is anti-male.

I guess I wouldn't see myself automatically assuming that someone who holds a position differing from mine is anti-whatever, until I've talked to them for awhile and found out that yes, they actually are openly hostile towards whatever position it is (and towards me for holding it). That can happen. But not all the time, every time, automatically.

I dunno. I don't like assumptions.

Nor do I. Those kinds of assumptions lead to the breakdown of peace, as every person that is in another group becomes suspect.

It also doesn't lead to conducive debates. If I walk into a discussion with you thinking you're out to destroy Christianity then I'm going to deal with the debate differently and everything will be slanted by that.

I don't like debating that way. I often don't look at icons of the posters here when I'm initially reading posts because I don't want my perspective to be awry because of their icon. Sometimes that just can't be helped, but oddly enough, it's usually when a Christian has posted something outlandish or out of touch with Christianity.

Do you feel it is ethical or correct to label every person that isn't 100% just like you as anti-(your group)? I have seen this come up several times recently on this forum. Is it possible for someone to not be of your group (i.e. non-Christian if you are a Christian) but not be some sort of radical person bent on taking down your group?

No. We are to love our enemies, and that would include not labeling anyone who isn't 100% like you an enemy. I think most rational people would agree that people with disagreements aren't therefore radicals.
