  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You seem to not understand the concept of illegal enemy combatant. It does not equal soldier of a Country with a Government. You might avail yourself of the ability to distinguish between the two.

penalize a country for not using America's standard for war. More arrogance!

I recall England did not like the American revolutionary's terrorist style either.

Just for the record, I was one of the first to call this situation not unlike the HBO show, Homeland. It turns out that I was close to the truth.

This dangerous and absurd exchange may have taken the VA scandal off the radar temporarily, but this may end up being an even bigger scandal. I wish I could say that Obama did something right, but alas, he's done wrong again....very wrong.

It has nothing to do with "penalizing any Country." First of all, what Country would you name? More to the point in this thread, the detainees in question do not represent any laws being broken. If anyone has been "penalized" here, it is them.

And of direct consequence to the issues in the thread, if we are ever completely not at war in Afghanistan, maybe we would be guilty of breaking law by continuing to detain them.

These are not US standards, but those of Int'l law. It would be nice if you could get at least one fact straight, sometime.

Jesse Ventura?

I don't know how they would compare physically, but at least when it comes to lying, they're on an even playing field.

It was Ventura that said if you give him a waterboard and 15 minutes he'd have Rumsfeld confessing to the Manson murders. Impeachment would be a kinder fate for Obama then facing Ventura, but what lies would you like to pin on him?

Take a nap. Bush is responsible for his administration, or at least that is what we are told when it comes to Obama.

We all know that. However, that doesn't make up for the fact that you were wrong thinking Bush made the observation about the five Taliban leaders held in Gitmo.

Don't you remember anything about the revolutionary war and privateering?

Read a history book.

Oh goodness, no wonder you don't understand how the Taliban are terrorists. You might want to read a history book.

Get it? Revolutionary war!

Bowe Bergdahl received two promotions while in captivity.

There is something very wrong with that.

He may face charges when he's fit. I can only hope so. Meanwhile, what can be done about Obama?

I think it's best left until he's been convicted, if he's convicted, before we start judging him or his actions.

As far as I'm aware, he's suspected of charges, not convicted yet.

You do realize it would be in the Obama Administration's political interest to make sure this guy is found not guilty...

I don't get it?

Let me take this. It was still a WAR. There were soldiers, who were identifiable, and clearly on one side not the other, not pretending to be civilians. I'm not sure I agree with the stress on "wearing a uniform" as we have it today, but they did that too. The Brits didn't like it because we didn't engage them in tactics they were familiar with, in which they certainly would have won, without even much of a contest. So yes we engaged in guerrilla tactics, but it was still WAR, not terrorism.

See the difference?

The people we've been holding in Gitmo did not engage in war, neither were they soldiers. They had no rights of any sort, and could've been legally executed had we felt like it. Not that that alone makes anything we've done right, but "right" is an option that flew out the window long ago.

Hopefully these 5 detainees will not fly out the window upon their transfer.
