  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

How many Christian denominations are there?

About 34,000.

There are about 34,000 different Christian groups in the world since AD 30. This is according to the World Christian Encyclopedia published in 2001. 1,200 different Christian denominations exist in the United States alone. Some groups classify Christianity into 8 meta-groups, namely Roman Catholicism (the largest), Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy and Assyrian Churches, Protestantism, Restorationism, Anglican Communicants, Pentecostal, and others.

Mark 3:24
24And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.

You might want to look at the context of Mark 3:24 rather than just slapping it "out there" and talking as if it applies in all seemingly similar instances.

What you really need for grist in your mill is a passage in the Bible that insist that God has promised to make every one of His followers see everything in the Christian life the same way .......

Ok? I'll start the timer..............................................

Uh. no! That quote from Phillipians 2:2 is an imperative for Christians to, themselves, make an effort to "be of once accord." It isn't a guarantee that God, Himself, is going to provide some "extra-ordinary" means by which all Christians will automatically agree with each other.

See the difference in meaning?

Well, does the evidence show that Christianity is divided against itself in all areas of doctrine & theology? Does the evidence show that all these different denominations & non denominations have no interest in uniting under one banner?

The fact that Christians have and historically have had differences of opinion between themselves is only problematic IF God said He'd prevent it from happening. He didn't. It's up to individual people, with the God-given brains they each have, to make the personal effort to learn and continuously improve their own understanding about concepts that God didn't reveal to us in any comprehensive manner.

The converse here also can't be ignored: even IF all Christians agreed with each other across the board, this would not show that Christianity is either real or true.

[Okay let me turn the table around here] You've asked me to show you from the bible where your God requires Christian's to unify in one accord, so I did my best there. Now it is your turn to show me where the bible says it's okay for Christian's to be divided & out of one accord.

That will depend on our common understanding of other extended concepts in our network of understanding, won't it? What do you 'mean' by divided? Just because you present a question with the term "divided" in it doesn't make it clear to us you're asking just what it is you're actually asking. You'll have to explicitly state which social division you're honing in upon so we can evaluate the issues which reside within the supposed disagreement among Christians.

Are we talking about A) theological details pertaining to God, Christ and the Bible that no one can really know in full, so some of the conceptual specifics are left open, OR B) heretical ideas about God, Christ and the Bible that can be discussed, explored, debated, and over which one can even be reprimanded due to gross assertions of error?

To the extent that they adhere to the basic Christian beliefs (as set forth, for example, in the Ecumenical Creeds) then, so what?
