• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

This Friday, God willing, I have an appointment with my former psychiatrist, to see about going back on meds. I have had chronic, severe OCD since age 3 or 4. I have been off meds for a long time, due to extreme adverse reactions to nearly each med I'd tried, though they helped a lot, too. I cannot access CBT/exposure-response therapy where I live, and am very much in need of medication. I'm just afraid to start down that road again, though, because of the bad experiences I've had with Anafranil and the SSRIs in the past. Yet, I know I've come to a point where I realize that I'm an ideal candidate for permanent medication. Please, if it is not too much to ask, pray for me in my quest to get my disorder treated.

Praying for you :prayer: .

I am permanantly on meds for my OCD. It has truly been a blessing. I hope the same for you.
Here is what I'm on (my psychiatrist is a specialist in ocd)
Prozac 40mg
Buspar 15mg
Trazodone 50mg
For severe anxiety I take Seroquel 25mg. Fortunately, I rarely have to take that one.

There must be some way for you to get exposure/response therapy. Maybe by phone, a doctor could help you. That too was a Godsend for me.

God Bless,
seajoy:)

Thank you so much for the encouraging reply! Yeah, I, too, am a believer in permanent meds for those of us who have had lifelong symptoms, and who need the help with functioning. And, I know that I'm definitely such an individual. You know how that goes- when there's no denying it, there's no denying it. I have heard really good stuff about Zoloft and Lexapro. I might ask about those next. The SSRI that helped me most before was Luvox; unfortunately, though, it also gave me some totally intolerable side effects. Trazodone is a great help for anxiety and insomnia, too- I second that one! Thanks again for the prayers and words.

I'm on permanent ocd medication.

Nothing works for me like Luvox! Prozac made me mean, and I just could not live every day feeling like that.

Luvox does decrease sexual gratification, but I'd much rather deal with that than live with OCD that would otherwise be ruining me!

Best Wishes!

Praying and wondering if this is a clue for me to see someone.I am up late again cleaning and tidying the house on just 6 hours sleep and work at 5 am.
I just can't control this anymore.
I will be praying that God continues to lead you to the help you need. You are His dear child, and He loves you.

I thought I was the only one who got reactions like that. Luvox and Zoloft did that to me- made me really irritable and agitated. Once, it even made me feel this really scary random flash of rage! Luckily, it passed within minutes to hours, and I kept it to myself, but....creepy.

It's totally not working out with any SSRI. I wish so much that I could just go back on Anafranil. But I have high blood pressure, and fear the cardiac side effects. I also get myoclonic jerks and chronic migraines, and fear the seizure risk because of that.

How I wish they'd come out with something new for this disorder...:sigh:

Did your doctor start you on your meds (any of them) slowly and work up to a needed dosage? I firmly believe one needs to start at the minimal dosage and slowly work up, and of course, with medical supervision. That's how I did it. I started slowly and went in weekly to see the doctor until we found "my" correct dose: 100mg a day (1/2 in a.m. and 1/2 in p.m.)

Also, have you been through cognitive behavioral therapy? I did this at the same time I started the Luvox. Honestly, the two work hand in hand. However for someone that does not or can not take the meds, I believe the cog. behav. therapy could be benificial.
