It greatly changes the probability of the 'if' clause being true and therefore the import of the whole statement. If someone writes, 'If Joe Biden is a typical Republican, then the GOP is in trouble', do you think it makes sense to point out that Biden is not a Republican?How does that change my statement? The keyword in that statement being "if".
