Former President Trump this week tossed a bone to immigration hawks, promising to issue an executive order rescinding birthright citizenship if he returns to the White House....

Birthright citizenship in the United States is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which states that all people “born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof” are citizens.

Birthright citizenship is more common in the New World than it is in the Old.

It's great when they bring in university professors to dialogue with politicians. It's like having an orangutan give a speech to a flock of vultures.
I didn't see any dialogue as you noted. Did I miss something?

The article artificially inserts the voice of Dr. Gerard Magliocca into the dialogue, but in other cases this occurs in fact.
So no dialogue between the good prof and any politician re this matter. Which is not surprising as his quotes were taken from an article he wrote 15 years ago. You'd think that if someone was proposing a change to the constitution they might quote an expert on the constitution. But maybe that's just me.

'We need an expert on constitutional law'.
'Ah, found an article by a professor who fits the bill. He made some relevant comments in 2008. We can artificially insert them here'.

What does that have to do with millions of people being in the country illegally?
If they actually accomplished repealing the Fourteenth Amendment, it would create millions more unauthorized/undocumented people in America.

To think Reagan pardoned millions of illegals. Today, Reagan would be an outcast in the republican party.

That could be one outcome. Another outcome is it could present there being less incentive to illegally enter the US to give birth.

The circumstances are a lot different than they were during the Regan era. Also folks seem to forget that President Clinton was very much against illegal immigration.

His comment is only directed to those who are ignorant of the facts.
An executive order cannot override the Constitution.

It has to do with everyone whose ancestors were/are immigrants that produced offspring. If you get your head out of you know where, you will see that it is only the natives who were already here when Europeans arrived that are legally here in the U.S. Imagine if the natives rose up and told all of European descent that they were no longer citizens even if they were born here.

What has changed? The only thing I have seen is the political machine has pretty much given up on compromise and tolerance, while using poor immigrants who are simply seeking stability as pawns in a vicious game which ends up killing people.
