Most homeless people are also mentally ill and unable to hold a job. There's also a high rate of drug addiction among the homeless. And drug addiction is an illness. I know the standard response is it's an illness you choose, but really it's not chosen anymore than someone with severe OCD chooses to wash their hands 100 times a day.

Listen I realize most of them are mentally ill, but without them being a harm to themselves or others there is nothing we can do. Even when we provide them with an opportunity for housing they sometimes turn it away as the documentary I watched showed. I am not saying they don't want to work because they are lazy..they can't work for a variety of reasons.

I like how people say trickle down doesn't work..it enabled us to become the largest economy in the world in a very short amount of time. Sure there are bumps in the road and there are sometimes adjustments, but trickle down has enabled our poor to become richer than the average citizens in many countries.

Don't try to spin this. The terms income inequality are not used in the entire article and only a couple of times was the concept of wealth addressed.

This is sick that we have become such weaklings in this country that so many are surrendering to circumstances, and are looking for government to have to lift them up at the expense of others because they are so weak minded.

Why don't you employ some reason and discover some new terms to use. Let me start you out with one:

Inverse Proportionality

The inference here is that you are not an amoeba, that you aren't weak or weak-minded, and that you don't surrender to circumstances. It could be you are weak or weak-minded or an amoeba figuratively speaking because circumstances favored you from the onset.

Did Paris Hilton deserve her fortunes at the age of 16? She sure had more than you do. Your idealism is hardly realistic.....

No, because even after reading some 4,000 books on human behavior, you still believe it's a workable system and that people don't instinctively form power structures.

What housing? The homeless population surged when the mental hospitals got closed down in the 80s by reagan. (Or was it 70s by someone else? I forget).

There's been a lack of adequate housing/affordable treatment for the mentally ill/chemically dependent.

I have no doubt some are so insane as to just refuse housing but I doubt that's accurate for a majority.

You can use that course of reasoning I suppose but you can't simultaneously argue that america/capitalism is a meritocracy, or that people are born equal and have all the same opportunities and that being poor is a result of not working hard, etc.

Sorry comparing two different things. Free market/versus forced labors. Every worker in America whether that is in the steel/auto/mining industry is better off. Our auto industry has been run into the ground by the Unions.

Everyone that wants to work hard can succeed. Sure it may take a generation or two for them to become wealthy, but almost anyone that works hard and makes the right choices can attain a middle class standard of living.

LOL, every time I hear someone blame a corporate loss on Unionization, I have to laugh! I use to work for a crane company called Deep South Crane and we were all Unionized. The owner loved the immediate climb in productivity that came with forcing him to pay higher salaries. Not salaries that are undeserved, but salaires that shouldn't need to be forced in the first place.

Did your union have job banks where people get paid full salary/benefits for not working? Did you have free healthcare for life? Did your company give you $3600 a month pensions?And if so, provide me the link to your union web site so I can check it out.
