  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

at petmart, petco, or some type of pet store, they sell 'pet off' spray. its completely humane. you spray it on the places that you don't want your cat to scratch. it will work for places you don't want your dog or cat to get up on. all it is is a foul oder that only the animals can smell. it doesn't really have a scent that us humans can sence. i have five cats and thats what we use.

I have a 9 month old coonhound, who has started barking incesantly at anything moving. I have to lock him out of a room in order to sweep or vaccuum. If I am sweeping around his crate he barks and then pounces on the broom. Once he even grabbed the bristles and tried to pull it right out of my hands. I can't let him out when I shovel because all he does is bark, and he really loves to play in the snow. I have never had a dog do anything like this before, any ideas?

*Anna9559- we had the same problem with our bengal, clawing and climbing, even tearing stuff up and got this recipe from a friend at the SPCA. Fill a spray bottle with a solution made up from boiling a chopped up spanish onion, jalapeno pepper and habanero papper in 2 quarts of water for 10 minutes and then straining it through a coffee filter and lightly mist the area that you want the animal to stay away from. The smell detours the animal and it's safe to use indoors and outdoors. It works really well, I passed the recipe on to a friend who uses it to keep bunnies from eating her garden.

Anna9559, that's exactly what you need to do to stop your beagle from clawing or chewing on anything. I had to do the same thing for my cats. That should work. If it doesn't I'll figure something else that will work.

Amyu, what I recommend first, is to enroll your coonhound in some group obedience trainng classes. Majority of Petsmarts have them. Start with the Beginners package and if that works out, and you want him to learn more, enroll him in the Advanced class. Second, a lot of his barking has to do with instinct. Coonhounds were trained for hundreds of years to bark at their prey, which usually was coons. They usually hunted in the dark, so they would bark at basically anything that moved. That is basically what he is doing now. What you need to do is train him to speak on command. Get him excited and when it looks like he is getting ready to bark, or even in the middle of one of his barks, say speak, and give him a food reward and praise him instantly. Once he has the 'speak' command down, teach him the command 'quiet'. Tell him to 'speak' and then right when he starts to bark, say forcefully, but not aggresivly, 'quiet'. This should help.
