The truth is that in an investigation Congress deposes a witness (in private) first, checks out the validity of the statements through investigation, and THEN holds a public hearing and ask the witness follow-up questions.. Hunter wanted special treatment and did not want to be deposed, and he and his attorney pulled the stunt of saying he would only testify in public. When he did not receive special treatment, facing contempt of Congress, he agreed to the deposed.

During that hearing a Democrat had suggested to the Chair that Mr. Biden testify rather than the committee just talking about him. (I believe there was an indication of potential acceptance.) The Chair rejected that and shortly later it became Ms. Greene's turn and Mr. Biden left during her time as a rejection of her personally. (She had shown blow-up nude photos of Mr. Biden in at least one prior public and televised hearing. She deserved the walkout.)
