  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No, I think JimB has read people's responses, but you didn't 'get' what he said/wrote....But that tongues has had a disproportinate amount attention in light of other issues or doctrines or principles, etc etc.
.

That isnt an objective evaluation unless you consider all the topics in all the forums on this website. And I believe if you take into consideration all the topics in all the forums, tongues isnt that much mentioned, after all.

My purely subjective opinion is that, since we are asked to count posts in this forum, that if you compare the proportion of times tongues is mentioned in this forum Bible and the number of times it is mentioned in the Bible, you would discover that this forum is a tad preoccupied with the subject.

Of course this is just an educated guess, since I don’t intend to count the posts that talk about tongues.

But I’ll bet I’m right.

tongues are the least of gifts, for prophesy is greater, read 1 corinthians. praying in unknown tongue is for our prayer language to God. our pastor explanined that the devil can read your mind, but if you speak in unknown tongue, that is between you and God. speaking in tongues for the church you need to have interpretor, for this is for the edifying of the church.

RIght on.

1 corinthians 14:5I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

You are correct but one could also say the same thing about many of the topics on any christian forum . I would rather see more threads on tongues which are harmless than on tithing . ;)

Some of us probably are still learning ourselves. I've been in church all my life but just recently started attending an Assembly of God church so tongues is relatively a new concept to me. I personally have not had that gift given to me yet, and I have lots of questions.
Yup, that's it. :)

Okay, It’s time to revive this thread.

I have a question (please don’t get defensive) … Why is there such an fixation with tongues on this forum? We have dealt at length with …

“A tongues question,”

“Speaking in tongues?.”
“To those that speak in tongues.”
“Praying in tongues,”
“Just some questions” (about tongues),”
“Must I speak in tongues to be Baptized in the Holy Spirit?,”
“Speaking in Tongues (All questions answered),
“Question about tongues,”
“Benefits of praying in tongues,”
“Mystery of tongues " - How Did YOU Start?,”
“Initial evidence – Tongues or the Word?”
Etc.

For instance, in the New Testament there are 260 chapters, in which tongues (as a spiritual gift) is mentioned in only 8 – i.e, in only one chapter in every 33. If you consider verses, the ratio is even lower. The Apostles felt it necessary to mention “tongues” less than 20 times in the entire New Testament but you would never know it from this forum. We have more threads devoted to the subject here than the Bible has chapters devoted to it!!

Don't get me wrong, I am NOT opposed to speaking in tongues – I am a tongue-talker myself, but I occasionally have to face the criticism that tongues is all Charismatics talk about. It’s not, of course, but I do think we talk about it too much and, if this forum is any indication, there is some justification for the criticism.

Are we obsessed with this gift, or what?

What do you think?

IMO, What this forum needs more than still another fatiguing thread about tongues :sigh: (they seem to be endless), we should be talking about gifts like discernment and wisdom. What do you say?

I agree with J.A.I.

It's true that the same questions on the subject of tongues repeat themselves over and over again. I encourage you, Charismatic Forum members, to make a compilation of the questions having been asked and the answers having been given and create a F.A.Q. in the "stickies". :)

But yes, this is a charismatic forum, it is the place to ask questions about a subject such as tongues. I still think that a F.A.Q. in the stickies would be a great idea! ;)

As for whether charismatics are 'obsessed' with the subject of tongues, I cannot tell. Maybe it depends?

I used to attend a Pentecostal church but never agreed with all of the doctrine concerning tongues. I do have the gift though. Anyways, I have found the preaching of the Word absolutely awesome in Pentecostal churches. I have oftentimes been challenged in my faith to walk more in holiness before the Lord and to hate sin. My experience with Pentecostal sermons is extremely positive. :D

I think that speaking about those issues which your pastors have shared during the Sunday morning sermon is also a great idea. ;)

Thanks for reading my rantings!

The Peace of Christ be with you all!

I still say we overdo it on tongues. A new tongues thread pops up nearly every day in this forum. :sigh:

Is there anything else of interest to P/C’s?

Sure, lets talk about prophecy (the gift) and prophets (the office). Lets talk about the gift of wisdom and knowledge. Lets talk about what Paul said when he wrote 2 Tim, I'm up for anything as long as it is edifying.
