  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Especially in workplaces and schools. One of my friends had to quit her job because of the bullying. It just seems some of her workmates didnt like her because of her ethnicity.

I havent encountered it so much but there has been name calling by ignorant kids. I was thinking poor Rosa Parks that she had to put up with that crap and not be treated like Gods creation that she was.

Watched 'the Help' movie last night.
I had seen it before at the movies but some friends wanted to watch it so watched it again.

Why was it that alabama and mississippi were the worst places for segregation? In the movie it wasnt about the buses it was that the african american maids werent allowed to use the same toilets that the white folk had. The white folk claimed it was because they might catch disease.

Now i know theres seperate toilets for men and women as we are different but to have toilets divided by race?! If you need to go you need to go!

It was a different time. Yes, there were plenty of people that genuinely believed black people and white people were barely the same race. It is sad.

I think one of the hardest things to let go of was dating/marrying someone with a different skin color....but even that seems to be becoming a non-issue, especially for the younger generations.

My father-in-law (in his 70s) was taught in church that the "mark of Ham" was dark skin....never mind that Ham's line would have died out when Noah boat went floating along.

Are the southern churches in usa still segregated?
Ive heard of 'southern baptists' and wondered if that just meant white baptist churches and nobody ever talks about northern baptists.

If you want to understand a big part of why there is segregation regarding churches google “lynching and the church”. There is also a book by Danielle L. McGuire called, “At the dark end of the street”. It will help you understand more of the real reason “why” Rosa Parks sat down "when she did", if you're interested.

There is A LOT to be said historically on the subject of Slavery in America including Slave Narratives, White supremacy, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, Civil Rights (actually 3 movements) Discrimination, Injustices, etc. but IMO you'd have to really want to know and seriously research it out for yourself so you can have a clear understanding...

Many churches are still fairly segregated ... but it isn't because they exclude anyone but rather go to the denomination of their choice. A traditionally black church service is very different from many traditionally white church service. It is cultural and by choice. They still read the same Bible. Anyone is welcome at either service though.

There is no such thing as "northern baptist"....and there are Southern Baptist churches in the north as well as south (though not as many). The black baptists I know belong to the American Baptists....there are other baptist affiliations and a black person would be welcome in a Southern baptist church and many do belong to Southern Baptist

?? Southern baptists were segregated according to wikipedia and condoned slavery..the leaders were slaveowners. They wouldnt let african americans be preachers. So they set up their own churches?

That is so weird. Ugh. I thought there was something a bit off about the southern baptists leaderships....i suppose thats where the 'white supremacists' come from.

Lots of groups including churches (not just Southern Baptist) were segregated, but I have attended multiple Southern Baptist churches believe all of them have had some black attendees/members who are very welcomed and valued. I suspect your data was pre-Civil Rights era (1960s). Read a biography on Martin Luther King, Jr if you really want to continue to learn about this time in US history.

Currently, the city of Detroit (not including the expansive suburbs), African Americans make up 82% of the population there. I am not sure what the population was prior to the race riots in the late 1960's but much of the city was destroyed and still shows decay from those days. Government corruption has been a big issue since those days and there was a mass exodus out of Detroit for the surburbs after the race riots to find safer places to live leaving only the poorest people behind. It once was a beautiful thriving city but now has a lot of urban blight. I suspect that people came to Detroit because of good job opportunities in the auto industry...and everywhere else to support the thriving auto industry.

The only reason someone would need to stand up on the bus these days is if a handicapped or elderly person needed a seat.

I really dont like how some groups of people think they superior to others, even if they are more educated or technologically advanced doesnt give them the excuse to treat others less fortunate badly.

In detroit i think it was they made cars and also motown music was born there.

However I heard the city collapsed and went bankrupt?! The car manufacturing became uneconomic or something.

Wonder if later in life Rosa Parks got herself a car so she didnt have to rely on public transport anymore.

The actual city of Detroit is struggling and trying not to die. Corruption in the city government along with violence caused many people to leave the city limits and move to outskirt townships & villages However, the suburbs are alive and well and thriving along with the auto industry again. Overall, it is a nice area to live. (Metro Detroit has a population of over 4 million. Less than 700,000 of those people actually live in the city of Detroit. The rest live in suburbs.) Downtown Detroit is actually very nice and safe. They have a great public area that has outdoor activities sponsored by the city for free including ping pong tables, outdoor concerts, and a "beach" full of sand complete with beach chairs along with a couple great theaters and two major sports stadiums (pro football & baseball). In the winter, they set up an outdoor skating rink. Many of the Detroit neighborhoods are blighted and the evidence of the 1960 riots is still evident and never have been repaired. During the race riots, the black inner city people burned up their neighborhoods in protest and nobody had the money to rebuild. So the people who had money (minorities included) moved to the suburbs where it was safe and the poor were stuck living in ruined neighborhoods that no longer had stores or local places to work...so they just got poorer.

My sister, being older, always got to ride shotgun and I had two brothers, they always sat near the door so I got squished in the middle.

Now I have my own car im always driving it (and other people) I usually let the children sit up front as long as they put their seatbelts on!

Ive given rides to handicapped and elderly, one time, they were having an outing and they paid for gas to take them to the beach.

Next week I am taking an elder to see a garden. And yea you dont need to be any race to ride up front in my car.

Am going to pick up that book by Rosa Parks.

Im trying to think of what similar things happened in my country, and there are some things like the maori people were told they couldnt even speak their own language, sometimes the pakeha ppl wouldnt rent out their homes to anyone who was a different race.

Which meant they didnt have anywhere to go if they wanted to work in the city.

that sounds very similar....all cultures have times in their history that they should be ashamed of...ostracizing groups of people based on things like skin color, heritage, and cultural differences....

Now reading Rosa Parks My story.

Page 94

There were even colored libraries. A person who wasnt white had to go to this library to take out books even if it was far away?! They couldnt go to the main branch which was for whites. They spoke the same language and the books were the same.

Unbelievable!!!

Ok finished reading my story. It was a short book.

Findings...
Rosa moved to detroit because her brother moved there. In montgomery she was let go of her job (or resigned) and so decided to make a new life up there. She very busy being secretary to activist organisations and got speaking engagements etc. she had a high school diploma but white folk wouldn employ her for anything more than domestic work ...this prejudice still exists today amongst the different races.

There were other women who didnt give up their seat on the bus but only rosas case went to trial at the supreme court, it was because she was a willing test case or pariah.

It seems she got along with white folk up north way better than the ones in the south as they treated her as a human being.

Segregation was worst in birmingham alabama.

The white folk tried to sabotage the bus boycott and even though the law was appealed and changed the hearts and attitudes of the white folk esp those in leadership like the city councillors and police, were unrepentant.
