Acts 4:

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.

What exactly is that name: Jesus, Yeshua, Yahshua, or …?

The spelling of a name is a label. The label itself does not save anyone; it names a person. By English convention, this name is often spelled as "Jesus."

Who is this Jesus? That's the important question.

Here is the context:

10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

That's the one. He died for our sins on the cross and was raised from the dead. Chinese people call him 耶穌. This name is pronounced differently by different Chinese dialects. Calling this person's name by your local convention is fine. Jesus knows who you are referring to.

Are we saved by the name of Jesus?

Yes. However, we need to recognize the essence over form. The important aspect is not the literal name, but who that name refers to - the person of Jesus Christ, his identity, and his role in salvation. There is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. No one can save us except the person of Jesus.

The name is, believing that Jesus is who He says He is. The Son of God/The Messiah, the resurrection and the life.


The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.”
Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
