No, you've gotten the physics wildly wrong there. If m is the mass of a dropped object, M is the mass of the Earth, G is the gravitational constant, and r is the radius of the Earth, then for an object dropped close to the surface,

F = ma = GmM/r^2

So that (cancelling the m's), the acceleration a = GM/r^2 = 9.8.

Arius --- OK, I see the problem now and I realize that I probably have inadvertently contributed to it. In your post #55 above you cited a number of accelerations, one being 9.807m/s/s for Earth. This is the acceleration due to gravity at the surface of the earth. This would actually be an average over the entire surface because it varies a bit due to the earth not being a perfect sphere and the uneven distribution of mass in the earth. It will also decrease with altitude above the surface and depth below the surface. For example at 250 miles above the surface a dropped object would accelerate at about 8.68m/s/s. Going back to the 9.8m/s/s at the surface, this is actually the combined acceleration of the earth and the object towards each other. The same force of gravity acts on both the object and the earth but the acceleration of the earth is microscopic compared to the object due to its vastly greater mass. The acceleration of two massive objects, say a planet and a moon, toward each other would have to be calculated based on their distance apart and their masses. However if the two are at rest with respect to each other they will fall together and meet at their centre of gravity. This means that if the two were equally massive, they would fall together at the same acceleration and meet half way. I hope this clarifies the confusion.

After a bit more reflection on some of your past posts, it seems to me that you may be equating force and acceleration. The same force may be acting on two objects but the more massive object will experience a smaller acceleration. This characteristic is sometimes referred to as "inertia".

My first attempt was in the physics building at the University of Regina but due to vibrations produced by heavy traffic and on campus construction, I had to move the experiment to a remote farm house on the prairie.
